It's How You Finish

The Albion College Britons clinched their 36th MIAA championship and 3rd in 5 years this past Saturday. The Brits defeated Alma College 66-28. Alma took an early 21-7 lead in the first quarter before the Brits settled in and scored 52 unanswered points. The Brit squad received several big performances to win the championship.

Junior, defensive back, Anthony Waite (Lakeland H.S., MI) received MIAA player of the week honors for his performance on defense. Waite had 12 tackles, 1 interception and 2 pass break ups. Senior, linebacker, Harrison Plaskey (Berkley H.S., MI) chipped in with 8 tackles, 1 sack and 2 tackles for loss.

Senior, quarterback, Dominic Bona (Pinckney H.S., MI) turned in another outstanding performance for the Brits. Bona was 23-40 for 285 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air. He also chipped in with 9 rushes for 75 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground. Senior, running backs, Colin Parks and Mike Czarnecki combined for 143 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns. 9 Albion receivers recorded a catch against the Scots. Kyle Slotnick (Pinckney H.S., MI), Mikal McKoy (Muskegon H.S., MI), Jon Alandt (Northville H.S., MI), Joe Mayone (Groves H.S., MI) and Rob Secord (Notre Dame Prep, MI) each recorded touchdown receptions. With the 66 points scored, the Albion offense broke the single season record for most points scored in a season by an Albion College offense.

The Brits complete their regular season with a 12 pm central time (1 pm Eastern) kick off at Aurora University in Illinois.

Albion Forges Tie Atop MIAA Football Standings

The Albion College football team knocked off #19 Olivet College last weekend. The Britons jumped on them early and often, winning the game 49-21 in a complete team effort.

The Albion defense held Olivet College to their lowest total offensive output all season, holding the Comets to 361 yards of total offense and to 31% on third downs. The MIAA's leading tackler, David Simon (Portland St. Patrick H.S., MI) led the defense with 11 tackles and several big hits. Sophomore, defensive lineman Austin Lynn (Canton H.S., MI) chipped in with 4 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1 sack.

Albion's offense put up 629 yards of total offense on the MIAA's #1 defense, including 256 yards on the ground (Olivet average up until this point was 89 yards per game). Senior, quarterback Dominic Bona (Pinckney H.S., MI) was 33 of 44 for a career best 373 yards and 5 touchdowns. Senior, running back Colin Parks (Southfield-Lathrup H.S., MI) had 118 yards rushing on 19 attempts with 2 rushing touchdowns. Tight End Joe Mayone (Groves H.S., MI) paced the air attack with 7 catches for 177 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Britons Ride Air Bona

The Albion College football team improved to 5-0 on the season last Saturday. The Brits defeated conference foe Kalamazoo College 72-40. The Brit squad jumped out to an early 16-0 lead and never looked back in the contest.

The Briton Hit Squad sacked Kalamazoo quarterbacks 7 times. Senior linebacker Harrison Plaskey (Berkley H.S., MI) earned MIAA Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. Plaskey contributed 12 tackles, 1 sack, 2.5 tackles for loss and also blocked a field goal attempt by the Hornets. Sophomore defensive lineman Hunter Shaw (Whitehall H.S., MI) had 4 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1 forced fumble.

The Albion offense returned to form racking up 665 yards of offense. Senior quarterback Dominic Bona (Pinckney H.S., MI) completed 29 of 42 passes for 325 yards and 6 touchdowns. Senior tight end Joe Mayone (Groves H.S., MI) had 4 catches for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns, scoring on the Brits first play from scrimmage. Senior wide receiver Chris McCall (Fraser H.S., MI) contributed 6 catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.

The offense also netted 303 rushing yards on the ground. Senior Colin Parks (Southfield Lathrup H.S., MI) had 11 carries for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns, while backfield mate Mike Czarnecki (Trenton H.S., MI) had 13 carries for 114 yards and one touchdown.

Running Wild

The Briton football squad moved to 3-0 on the season, outscoring Lakeland College 47-21. The Albion defense harassed the Lakeland quarterback all game long. The Brits intercepted the quarterback once and sacked him 4 times. Our defense also held the Muskies to 46 yards on 25 carries!

Junior linebacker, Jose Rodriguez (East Kentwood H.S., MI) had a stellar game. Rodriguez had 11 tackles, 1 sack, 3 tackles for loss and 2 pass break ups. Senior cornerback, Kyle Pelayo (Rochester Adams H.S., MI) chipped in with the interception.

The Albion offense chipped in with 572 yards of total offense on 107 plays. Included in all of those yards, the Brits accumulated 40 first downs and 336 yards rushing. Senior running back Colin Parks (Southfield-Lathrup H.S., MI) led the ball carriers with 169 yards on 25 carries and 3 rushing touchdowns. Mike Czarnecki (Trenton H.S., MI) chipped in with 116 yards on 18 carries and a rushing touchdown. Czarnecki also had a receiving touchdown on a screen play that covered 28 yards. The offense had 11 receivers chip in with a reception. Joe Mayone (Birmingham Groves H.S., MI) led all receivers with 61 yards receiving on 4 catches and a touchdown.

Our squad heads in to our bye weekend. We play Hope College, at 5 pm, in Holland next weekend.

Piling Up Points

The Albion College Football team traveled to Rock Island, Illinois last Saturday. The Brits came back 60-49 winners vs. Augustana College, a traditional Division III powerhouse. The Vikings and Brits battled it out through the first 3 and a half quarters. Albion picked up key touchdowns late from Kyle Winchell (Homer H.S., MI) and Mike Czarnecki (Trenton H.S., MI), while the defense came up with a couple of key stops late in the contest.

Dallis Reynolds, a sophomore defensive tackle (Buchanan H.S., MI) led the defense with 10 tackles. Senior free safety, David Simon (Portland St. Pat's H.S., MI) also had an excellent game on defense and special teams. Simon chipped in with 12 tackles, 1 interception and a pass break up.

The Briton offense rolled up 733 yards of total offense on the day, including two scoring drives of over 90 yards. Senior QB, Dominic Bona (Pinckney H.S., MI) threw for a career best 370 yards on 25 of 36 passing and 4 touchdowns. Bona also ran the ball 9 times for 86 yards and 2 touchdowns. Senior running back Colin Parks (Southfield-Lathrup H.S., MI) contributed 18 rushes for 96 yards and 2 touchdowns. Parks backfield mate Czarnecki had 19 rushes for 181 yards (9.5 avg.) and a 58 yard touchdown run to seal the victory. Senior wide receiver Chris McCall (Fraser H.S., MI) had another big game with 5 catches for 106 yards. McCall tied the school record for touchdown receptions in a game with 3. In all, 8 Briton receivers chipped in with receptions.
