Leashes Save Lives—But Not Always: What You Need to Know About Wearing a SUP Leash in Moving Water 07/05/2025

A great reminder from Hydrus Board Tech

As we're in one of the biggest paddle weekends of the summer, I wanted to reach out personally with an important reminder.

Wearing a leash on your paddleboard is usually the right move, but not always.

In moving water like rivers, creeks, or strong currents, a standard ankle leash can become a serious danger. If it snags on a rock, branch, or underwater obstacle, it can trap you, fast. Sadly, there have been multiple drownings over the past few years because of this exact scenario.

If you're paddling in moving water this weekend, please:
Wear a PFD (not just have it nearby)

Never use an ankle leash in current

Use a waist-mounted quick-release leash if you need one

This guide breaks down why ankle leashes can be dangerous in rivers and currents, how to stay safe with the right gear, and when to use a quick-release leash and PFD instead.
