Mari Peña Casa Flamenca Albuquerque, NM

Workshop - Secretos de los Cantes de Lebrija y Utrera
1.5 hour
5 day workshop

Mari Peña
The Peña family, known as "De la Buena," is related to Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera, Juan Peña "El Lebrijano," Inés and Pedro Bacán, and has worked with El Lebrijano, Manuel de Paula, and Inés Bacán. They have participated in numerous recordings, most notably on the albums "Utrera Joven por fiestas" and "Gitanas por Bulerías," both released by Luna Disco. They have performed on numerous occasions at the Mont-de-Marsan International Festival (France), sharing the stage with artists such as José de la Tomasa, Carmen Ledesma, Gaspar de Utrera, and Pepa de Benito. They have also toured the Netherlands and Germany with Bernarda de Utrera and Miguel Funi's show. Of particular note are her appearances at various editions of the Seville Flamenco Biennial in shows with Pedro Peña, Inés Bacán, Co**ha Vargas, Carmen Ledesma, and others. She recently performed at the Teatro Central in Seville, the Nîmes International Festival, and in Paris, where she achieved resounding success.
Her participation in the most prominent Andalusian festivals, such as the Casabermeja Festival, El Gazapacho de Morón, La Caracolá Lebrijana, El Potaje Gitano de Utrera, La Hierbabuena de Las Cabezas, and many more, demonstrates that Mari is becoming an increasingly essential artist in the Andalusian cultural scene. In September 2013, she was invited by the Antonio Mairena Foundation to give a recital at the University of Seville on the anniversary of the maestro from Los Alcores. In 2014, she toured several theaters in Japan, performing in the country's major cities, with the show "Plata y Oro" by Antonio Canales and Carmen Ledesma. In 2016, the show "Trianero," again directed by Antonio Canales, premiered at the Seville Biennial.
That same year, 2016, she performed at the legendary “Studio 104” of the “Maison de la Radio” at France Musique, an iconic venue for world music in the French capital. https://youtu.be/hCpPRgDXEts?si=mcTEiwHLPUH3-EDlIn short, Mari Peña is the worthy heir to the flamenco singing tradition of her town, Utrera. That's why she places special emphasis on maintaining the traditional school of this town's flamenco singing tradition: soleás where she always remembers her elders: Perrate, Fernanda, Maria Peña, Chacha Fernanda, etc.; cantiñas of Pinini (her great-grandfather's brother); tientos in the style of Gaspar; and other songs… with a finale that brings together all the styles of the region and its most famous performers: Turronero, Manuel de Angustias, Bambino, Bernarda, and others. (The aforementioned Gaspar, Perrate, and Fernanda).Mari has an album on the market: “Mi tierra” (My Land), where she explores various styles with great sensitivity and skill.
Antonio Moya
A self-taught guitarist in his early days, he met the maestro Pedro Bacán, who fully integrated him into his family and his shows. With the Pinini clan, he toured Europe, participating in all the prestigious flamenco festivals. He is the regular accompanist for Inés Bacán, Pepa de Benito, Carmen Ledesma, Tomás de Perrate, and Mari Peña, among others. He was the last guitarist for the late Gaspar de Utrera, Fernanda y Bernarda, and Manuel de Angustias, among others. He has worked with flamenco singers such as Juan Peña "El Lebrijano," Miguel Funi, Agujetas de Jerez, Chano Lobato, Pansequito, Chiquetete, Triana Pura, Manuel de Paula, and many more.
