I am not proud of this, but I remember a long stint in college when I couldn't wait for Thursday because we would go to Burt's Tiki Lounge (RIP) and drink $1 PBR cans and dance on a sticky floor until they kicked us out.

It is incredible that now I can't wait for Thursday to train hard with an incredible group of positive, like-minded individuals looking to better themselves. Burt's was fun, but this iteration is way f*cking better.

Dark Haven Studio will be heading in a new direction and introducing new coaches to our team. While we love the 10th Planet system, we are currently unable to maintain our affiliation. With this change we are incredibly excited to announce our new Head Instructor and Head Wrestling Instructor.

Dark Haven Studio was founded on the desire to build a group focused on growth and evolution both on and off the mats. The future continues to be bright, and we will persist in developing as grapplers, humans, and positive role models to those in our surrounding lives.

We are very excited to announce that Cody Smith will be stepping into the role of Head Jiu Jitsu Instructor at Dark Haven Studio. Those who have had the opportunity to train with and learn from Cody know that he is an incredible grappler, passionate teacher, and wholeheartedly devoted to the art of jiu jitsu. Here’s to endless hours of country music ahead . . .

In addition to Cody, we are ecstatic to have Cullen McDonald stepping into the role of Head Wrestling Instructor. Over the next few months, we will be building out our wrestling program and class schedule. Cullen’s wrestling is top-notch and also has over 10+ years of no-gi jiu jitsu. This is a new avenue for our studio, and we couldn’t be more excited to dive deep into the world of wrestling with Cullen. Be on the lookout for Cullen's Wrestling classes coming soon.

We will continue to provide a diverse array of training times and classes. As you can see from the schedule above, we will continue to offer:

First time working referee's position while looking for dominant position: side control, knee on belly, or mount. It produced some fun scrambles; looking forward to how this develops in next week's session.

This is hands down my favorite part of the week: the debrief.

After an hour of hard positional training, we sit and process the session. We go around the group and share the best and worst things for us personally during the training. The intention is to distill the intense, chaotic session into two takeaways: what is something that you did repeatedly well, and what is something that repeatedly did not go your way.

The idea was borrowed from my good friend who used it as a conversation starter whenever we would hang out. He would ask me, "What is the best thing that's happened to you today and what's the worst?" I'll never forget this and love how it encourages us to slow down for a second and think back about our day or experience.
