Albuquerque Aikikai: Aikido

Albuquerque Aikikai is a traditional Aikido dojo. Aikido is a Japanese Budo (martial art) developed by Prof. Morihei Ueshiba in the early 1900s. It is based on principles of blending with your attacker and neutralizing aggression.

Visitors are always welcome at Albuquerque Aikikai. We offer beginner's classes several times each year. Training in Aikido helps you integrate body, mind and spirit while developing respect and compassion, learning self-confidence, and getting in shape. Unlike many martial arts, Aikido is non-competitive. Training is cooperative. Students work to develop good character and evolve the creative side of the brain. We have a close collaboration with Kurita Shihan of Kuritajuku Aiki in Mexico City.

Covid-19 Update:

Albuquerque Aikikai values the safety and health of our members. In response to the spread of coronavirus in New Mexico and in keeping with guidelines from the state government, we will close the dojo through at least April 30. As of now, we plan to reopen after that date, when we will start with no-contact weapons training.

These dates are subject to change as the situation warrants. We will post updates here, on abqaikido.com, and through email.

Members, please remember to pay dues in March and April so that we can cover the April rent and keep the dojo open. Please see your email for more information or send us a message if you have any questions.

[03/12/20]   Update: Albuquerque Aikikai will close until at least April 1. Please see our most recent post for more information.

Notice on Covid-19 Coronavirus prevention measures from Okuyama Sensei:

Students, Albuquerque Aikikai will be modifying its schedule starting March 12. We will move over to no-contact weapons-training classes from 6-7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Iaido will continue on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The 10 am Saturday class will be a mix of basic and advanced weapons training.

Beginners class students: This will be excellent time to learn the basics of bokken and jo.

Friday classes will remain at 5:30 and also switch over to basic weapons training.

We ask that anyone showing signs of illness remain home. Please be active with washing your hands and avoid touching your face. We will be stepping up dojo cleaning measures and disinfecting common surfaces.

We will continue to monitor the latest recommendations from our local health professionals and will announce any further changes to the schedule both here on Facebook and on our website.
