📚What is a Peña? In Spain and Latin America, “Una Peña” is a communal gathering space or social club where people unite around a shared passion for arts, food, or community activism. In countries like Argentina, Chile, and Peru, a peña (often called La Peña) is an intimate, participatory folk music event. Communities gather in informal venues to listen to traditional acoustic music, dance, and share regional food and wine. Unlike standard concerts, audience participation is highly encouraged. In the 1960s and 1970s, peñas served as vital underground spaces for resistance and Nueva Canción (New Song) movements, where locals could discuss social justice and grassroots politics away from oppressive regimes. In Spain, a “Peña Flamenca” can be found throughout Andalucía and are dedicated to preserving and celebrating flamenco. During the Franco regime in Spain, Peñas Flamencas happened behind closed doors and in secret gatherings, often under government surveillance. While Franco’s regime officially co-opted sanitized flamenco as a national tourist attraction, authentic, unfiltered gatherings were heavily repressed as subversive cultural dissent.

🫶🏽 We honor the cultural history and importance of these spaces. “La Peña Cultural” is an expression of culture, identity and resilience. We encourage you to be loud and celebratory throughout the show as we honor the hard work and cultural vibrancy of our youth and community.

Dear community,

On Monday, part of the Bliss Building, whom we share a wall with, partially fell into the street. We are extremely grateful no one was injured.

Due to the uncertainty of the structural integrity of the building next to us, we have completely evacuated our building. We are urgently looking for a location to move our programs until we are confident we are safe. If you have any leads or want to help during this time, please reach out to 505-503-6040.

In Downtown, we are interconnected, literally and figuratively. We share walls, we share struggles and we share memories. As the fate of the Bliss Building becomes uncertain, so does the fate of Flamenco Works. For the past 60+ years, Lindy’s Restaurant has been an important space for joy, comfort and connection in Downtown, Albuquerque. With the future uncertain for what this corner will become, we will fight for this legacy to continue. Downtown and Central Avenue is the beating heart of our city, and we hope to work together to build a future where we can create bright memories while ensuring the safety of our community.

☀️SUMMER CAMP: Teacher Highlight☀️Meet Kerry Bergen, our incredible art teacher! Kerry considers herself a diverse artist and she likes to explore the creative processes. Her work ranges from mixed media, abstract, to pop art, and folk arts. She teaches at various venues in the Albuquerque area including the South Broadway Cultural Center, City Cultural Services Old Town Events, and the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe. Bergen’s real passion is teaching what she calls “make and take” cultural crafts.
