Episode 142: Angelo Baca (Diné/Hopi): Bears Ears should not be a battle. This place is for healing.

I'm elated to post this Podcast by a former accomplished SIPI runner, Ph.D. candidate, and current Sports Warriors Track Club Master's team member. This podcast is about more than just the fight to save, Bears Ears National Monument, it touches on several current Native issues being faced today. I can't express the pride I felt listening to Angelo address the tough questions and not back down. And the special feeling that I've always expressed to my runners, you're more than just an athlete, go out and find what that is. This is the calling that he was pursued and still continues to run to this day. It's a long podcast, but I guarantee you will enjoy it. Just a small snippet of some of, Angelo Baca awards while running for SIPI. Sports Highlights - - -
3X National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Champion in Cross Country and on the outdoor track in the 3000 meters steeplechase and 5000 meters in 2002-03

Episode 142: Angelo Baca (Diné/Hopi): Bears Ears should not be a battle. This place is for healing. "We're focussed on the wrong thing - people are caught up in this controversy or that battle, but we always say, Bears Ears is about healing." I've been running, cycling, and climbing in this area for decades, and on a recent trip, I realized ... that I knew little about this place. The history and....

I was saved during the pandemic as Texas still had in-person races. (Ran 5 races in Texas and snuck one in at Tucson) Here I am just before a race in, Del Rio, Texas. I had no idea of this place and the history of the town. There is a trail race series that Sports Warriors Track Club is a part of. If you're interested, please join us, there are still 5 more races. SWTC will pay your fee to join our team. Paulette and I have been hanging in there with just us two, we could use some help! The next one coming up is April 17th just southeast of Amarillo, TX. My flight is booked and I'm ready. Distances vary, but they have a race for everyone, 5k, 10k, 25k, 50K, 100k. My favorite one is in Corpus Christy, where you run on the beach the entire way listening to the ocean. Let me know if you want more details.

1990 Prefontaine Classic - Men's Mile

Want another great watch to get your sports Native American Sports fix. Here is a video of, Maurice Mo Smith, Navajo, who runs a very fast sub 4:00, (3:57:40) mile. There are so many things I could post about, Mo, but in due time. I will state that Mo is one of the visionary founders of Sports Warriors Track Club, and still supports our club/program to this day. Without Mo, this program doesn't exist. I'm proud to call Mo one of my best friends.

You still have time to get your run in. I got mine in today. Run tonight, get a good full moon run in, I did that one last night. SWTC runners, we've always talked about running for a purpose other than ourselves, here is a good one. It's sad this had to happen to someone who was doing what we cherish and take for granted. 2.23 my brothers and sisters.

Sports Warriors Track Club was well represented at the 2020 USATF Cross-Country Trials in San Diego, CA. The men's team finished 3rd in the Open Team competition. Each year I have the great and unique opportunity to meet and bring new and amazing runners into the SWTC fold, and this year was no exception. I want to thank these outstanding young men for another great experience and story to spread around the campfire. Looking forward to seeing more great success from each one of you. L-R Ish, Alfredo Meija, Jackson Thomas, Tito Chaidez Martinez, Santiago Hardy, Aaron Gould. Looking forward to those who may go into battle with us again in the future. I think it might be safe to say we will be participating in the USATF Club Championship this coming December 2020. The club Championships are far more competitive than the US Trails, and SWTC has done well at this course in San Franciso in the past.

Sports Warriors Track Club women's team at the USATF XC Championships in San Diego, CA, January 18, 2020. They ran their hearts out for 10 kilometers, a tough distance for XC, and against some of the fastest ladies in the U.S. These did a great job representing SWTC and I/we are very proud of them. Each one of them is working towards their college degree and representing the University of Antelope Valley XC and Track teams. I'm always blessed to meet new and outstanding individuals every year. Thank you, ladies, for stepping out of your comfort zone to represent our club. Although we admit, this competition is more about individuals make the US team for the XC Worlds, there is still a team competition, and our ladies finished first!! Runners from L-R. Beatriz Duarte, Sydney Staples, Miranda Watchman, Lidia Briseño

Well, as they say, you can never start planning too early for some things. Sports Warriors Track Club has our eyes set on the 2020 Club Nationals in San Francisco, CA this December. After a successful U.S. Cross Country Championship meet, (Open Men 3rd place team, Open Women 1st place team, and Masters Men, 2nd place team) we are looking forward to the much more competitive Club Championships. With the success of the Master men, we will look to continue taking a Master's team for the club championship as well. The Master's team is comprised of many multicultural nationalities, however, we want to focus on adding more Native men to the mix. Can there be an interest in a women's Masters team...hummm. If you're over 40 and want to discuss, please inbox me and we can go from there. As always, we will entertain any open, under 40, men and women runners who want to be considered as well.

We are particularly seeking any females to possibly field a team. Inbox us if you want more information. Congratulations to the University of Antelope Valley men's team, and one native female, for qualifying for the NAIA National XC Championships. The teams were built in just one year. The men's team has a great mixture of Native American and Hispanic talent that has blended quite well. The women's team which was always near last in the conference standings jumped to 3rd place. With two outstanding Native American coaches, this program is on the rise. For you up and rising high school and Juco runners, this would be the place to consider continuing your running carrier. SWTC has benefitted having several of the runner's Coach Clay Mayes has developed on our team.

SWTC is inviting you to come join us at our next venture, supporting and participating in the Bear Ears run. This is a free event near Blanding, Utah that is to help bring awareness of a recent battle to keep these sacred lands from being mined and destroyed. I've always encouraged any runner to do at least one run/race a year for something other than yourself. If you haven't got that race in this year, here you go! I'm inviting all of you to join us for this great cause. Get off the pavement and run in a place that has been sacred for hundreds of years. Get blessed, feel the blessing, and pass the blessing forward.

Wow, when you join the ranks of fellow Haskell alumni, Billy Mills, Gerald Tuckwin, Al Waquie, and Ricky Baker, you may have done something. Not to mention the many others, native and non-native, who have received this award from the Jim Thorpe run. Ann Wheelock Gonzales, Theresa Clay, Matt Henry, Esther Torivio, Mary Kirsling, William Marino, just to name a few. This is very humbling. This is much more rewarding because of the hundreds of great runners, athletes, students and loving friends that have crossed my path, most of all Paulette Dixon and my family who has given me unconditional support and freedom to be me and do what I love. Thank you so much Running Medicine and the Jim Thorpe 5k Run.

Congratulations to JTR #11’s honoree, Coach Mike Daney! Thank you for your years of service, coaching, and love!

Jim Thorpe, Who Was Born 132 Years Ago Today, Continues To Inspire Decathletes Generations Later

teamusa.org Trey Hardee was a junior in high school and a burgeoning multisport athlete when learned of Jim Thorpe, the so-called “world’s greatest athlete,” from a book about the greatest sports personalities of all time.

JIM THORPE LIVES: As reported last year I had decided to step away from directing the race, it was time for a break. As it turns out I've received multiple calls and emails hoping that the race could continue. If somebody was going to take the race over, I wanted to be sure that it would go into the hands of someone who would keep the core values of the event in tack. It had to stay, family centered, Native American Championship, and keep the Traditional throw. As it turns out there was an organization that has stepped up to take over the race for 2019. That organization is none other than, RUNNING MEDICINE. The date has been set for Saturday June 29, 2019. SAVE THE DATE. Jim Thorpe Community 5K Run and Native American 5K National Championship.
