Former President Bill Clinton used a church pulpit in South Florida to push back on anti-Muslim rhetoric, telling a congregation he was done watching Muslims get singled out for their faith.
Speaking Tuesday night at Koinonia Worship Center in the Hollywood-Pembroke Park area of Broward County, Clinton appeared at a multi-faith event while campaigning for Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Jolly.
“I’m tired of people denigrating Muslims for being Muslims,” Clinton told the crowd. He then invoked the Quran, crediting the passage to his daughter Chelsea, who he said read the book cover to cover at age 15 and pointed it out to him: “Allah put the different people on the earth, not that they might despise one another, but that they might come to know one another and learn from one another.”
He added, “There are bad actors in every faith because we’re all flawed human beings.”
The verse Clinton cited traces to Surah Al-Hujurat 49:13, which states humanity was divided into nations and tribes so they could know one another. His remarks come as the Trump administration faces renewed criticism over its rhetoric toward Muslim Americans.
