IYASW CIYT, Leah Greenberg Flaks, from Albuquerque, NM.

Day 10 of IYNAUS’s Iyengar Yoga Experience - 30 days with 30 teachers. Today's asana is Padahastasana demonstrated by Leah Greenberg Flaks from the IYASW region. Leah teaches at Bhava Yoga Studio

This pose requires straight legs and so to open the back of the legs practice all of the standing poses and similar poses like ardha uttanasana, uttanasana and padagusthasana to help you develop this pose.
Insert the entire palm under the feet and keep the hips directly over the feet so the weight of the feet press the hands down which feels good for the hands. Padahastasana is also good for the abdomen and relieves symptoms of bloating and indigestion. It corrects slipped discs in the concave back position but as this is a strenuous asana and difficult for some to achieve the concave position, Mr. Iyengar says it's imperative to practice this pose with the help of an experienced yoga teacher. LOY plate 45-46

We invite you to join us for this 30 day Iyengar Yoga Experience with different CIYTs from across the country. We would love to see the asanas and the modifications you've come up with. Please use the hashtags and tags so we can see your photos.

Places that have held me as a teacher in 2019:

Bhava Yoga Studio & At Heart Center Yoga teamed up in a dream-like collaboration to bring learn to teach yin to Albuquerque... it started with a thing I wrote, that someone shared, that Katie read. Then, in a remarkable act of selflessness, Katie suggested that Marisol host.

And the desert won me back, like she always seems to do.

2017 Jeanne Gauna Awardee Susan Schuurman says, Farah Nousheen was born in India and grew up in the United States and in Seattle where she studied, then came to UNM to get a masters in American Studies; her master’s thesis was on Israel as a Settler Colonial state, after her visit to Palestine. Besides creating Yoga for People of Color for Healing and Empowerment, which meets every Sunday evening at Bhava Yoga Studio, she also directed the documentary Nazrah: A Muslim Woman’s Perspective (2006) and cofounded Tasveer, the South Asian Film Festival based in Seattle (2005).

Farah is a gem in our community. She is a teacher who with love and gentle guidance nurtures self-care, resilience and resistance to oppression through leading yoga and meditation circles and critical race theory discussions for people of color. Her steadfast and strong leadership in the whirlwind of hate, violence, trauma and harm is a calming and regenerative force for healing and light.

The day after the fatal election of 2016, Farah Nousheen founded Yoga for People of Color, anticipating that the election of a white supremacist, misogynist, xenophobic, and predatory capitalist U.S. administration will ruthlessly and inhumanely target black people, indigenous peoples, people of color, LGBTQ people of color, immigrants, Muslims, and “others”.

Moreover, we will collectively and individually RESIST and FIGHT with all our might because that is what we have done since 1492.
Therefore, we will need a healing, brave and sacred space to rest as well as to develop a spiritual practice that is especially for us. We will not be able to find the yoga nor meditation practice that is being offered in predominantly white and commercial yoga studios or even meditation centers that just do not have experience of teaching to people who are the targets of and challenge white supremacy. People of color heal in community. Farah was already on a path towards creating yoga spaces for people of color, and the election made it urgent. Our first yoga for people of color gathering was on Dec 3rd, 2016 with 14 people of all ages with roots in the four directions. Soon after, a number of yoga teachers of color became interested in the project and we became a community. Since then we have expanded to offer several types of gatherings including a meditation gathering of a POC sangha, weekly resting circle for API women, restorative yoga in the South Valley, monthly critical reading evening, and regular workshops and gatherings.

We are a conscious community creating healing spaces for the empowerment and liberation of people of color. We are dedicated to organizing intentional gathering spaces for self-identified black people, indigenous peoples, and people of color to practice yoga and meditation. With every gathering we hold, we aim to reclaim yoga and meditation. Our gatherings have themes in self-care, healing, empowerment, meditation, prayer, movement, breath, critical race studies, settler colonialism, yoga and diverse philosophies, social justice, intersectional feminism, and community. We provide safe, healing spaces and tools for black people, indigenous peoples and people of color to build a spiritual practice centered around social justice. Farah is the founder and director of Yoga for People of Color for Healing and Empowerment and she is Senior Academic Advisor at UNM, including peace studies and social justice student advisement."

Felicitaciones Farah! 💓 We look forward to celebrating your accomplishments along with the other award winners during the fiesta this weekend!

💜🎂 HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAM 🎉💗

We love Pam! Today we celebrate her as she completes another trip around the sun. Happy Birthday 🎈!

Not only does she teach yoga with a gentle and strong edge, but her calm and soothing energy and voice brings everyone into a place of ease. Everyone feels welcome. And no matter your level, you are challenged to your individual edge.

With simple cues and a smooth flow all of a sudden you find yourself in an unexpected pose. Then she say … and now press into your hand, turn from the waist and reach up. With each exhale deep into the pose 😳🥵Then when you look up, she is opening effortlessly into Parivrtta Trikonasana. 😳😯Dammit Pam!

We love and are inspired by her gracefulness as she shows her strength with such grace.

Happy birthday to yoga badass Goddess !!! Thank you for sharing yoga 🧘🏽‍♀️ 🧘🏽‍♂️ 🧘🏽 to Albuquerque for over 20 years. We ❤️ you!!!

🎶 Feeling exhausted?
🎶 Need a break?
🎶 Restorative Yoga with LIVE music

We are super excited to welcome Aimee Conlee back to Bhava. Aimee is trained in Yoga of the Voice, a Reiki healer and is a joy to be around. She’s bringing sound healing (bowls , bells and chimes) and chanting to our Wednesday restorative yoga class at 6PM led by Martha Pino .

This special class is the perfect mid-week break you’ve been looking for.

Restorative Yoga is all all about slowing down your mind and opening your body through passive stretching. During long holds of various seated and lying poses, your muscles and connective tissue (joints, ligaments, fascia) are given time to soften and let go, releasing tension. Using props, you are held and your body is supported, leaving you feeling relax and restored.

See what’s new at Bhava - not what you expect 😃🦶✋💪

✨💫 NYASA 💫✨VIN✨💫

The Sanskrit word NYASA means “to place”. well, that’s simple enough but … maybe a bit more info …

….. “to place“ means “a particular position or point in space“. Applying this to yoga postures, we put our body in a specific position relative to the ground. Each pose begins by PLACING our feet 🦶hands✋ arms 💪 or hips… as the foundation. It grows upward from there.
Up ⬆️ Up 🆙 Up.

The Sanskrit word VIN means in a special, sacred, or intended way. So to VIN a posture is to create it in a special and intentional way.

Putting these two words together in a special way creates the word VINYASA. Vinyasa means moving fluidly from pose to pose. Said another way,
….
“ Mindfully placing the entire body in a special way creating each pose to its fullest and then moving fluidly to the next pose.”
-

Level-up and VINYASA it with music and good vibes (bhavs) with Saturdays at 11:30.

We love Claudia and her passion for finding challenging flows. Her joy is
helping students try more advanced poses and flows. Oh, and signature red lipstick 💄 is the bomb

🧡Today is Native American Heritage day. In honor of the native people we at Bhava acknowledge we are established on unseeded an occupied indigenous land of the Tiwa and Tewa Territories.

We acknowledge the past and ongoing native resurgence and resistance to the colonization of this land. We ask all who gather here to recognize in your hearts and minds the original indigenous peoples and stewards of this land we are living on.

We celebrate the contributions of Native peoples and honor their influence on our city, our lives, and the nation. We hope to provide a trauma informed environment, free of prejudice and without ignorance.

Fact: The City of Albuquerque ranks sixth in the U.S. for a city that has highest percentage of Native Americans and has as many as 400 tribes represented.

More exciting news!

I am thrilled to welcome Alexander Rodriguez to the Bhava’s teaching staff. Alexandra came through Denver via San Francisco. Kari Kwinn, a dear teacher, recommended her. She began practicing 15 years ago and then decided to go deeper and signed up foe YTT. Her enthusiasm is only matched by her bright and welcoming smile. Her passion to help students slow down and find their best practice is what keeps her stepping into the seat if the teacher. Not only does she teach Vinyasa flow but she also specializes in Yin yoga.

Exciting news!

We are super excited to welcome Claudia Gonzalez to teaching Bhava’s staff. I first met Claudia at a yoga festival right here and Albuquerque. Her down to earth vibe balanced perfectly with her vibrant red lipstick. Over the years her dedication to Yoga and her continued practice inspires those around her. Her willingness to challenge her self while honoring Yoga‘s roots shows is what makes her such a badass.

3 C’s on how to give back;

1. Care
2. Compassion
3. Concern

Giving back brings your awareness into the world around you and gives you the chance to help and support some one else.

Why does this matter?

1. Takes the selfishness in our lives and replaces it with selflessness
2. It builds stronger social connections to friends and community
3. It also makes us happier and healthier too

04/07/2021

The 3-G’s to maintain a healthy life:

1. Create a Growth Goal every day
2. Give back… One small act of kindness daily
3. Gratitude… Give gratitude or even the tough lessons.

Right now is a huge time of change in Albuquerque with students going back to in person schools. The teachers are managing both in person and still virtual for those who chosen to stay. These are the times we are maintaining healthy habits will help so much.

Fill in the blank:

Just because _______.

“March”ing toward your wellness goals.

Goals are steps toward something bigger.

What inspires you to keeping marching forward?

What inspires you to create a life that feels good?

How to be happy:

The good news is we are happy and joyful. We came into this world in this state. Through our experiences and choices we have moved away from this state. This quote says it all.

“I have lived a long life and had many troubles, most of which never happened.” – Mark Twain

The challenge is choosing joy over suffering. Here are a few ways to short circuit your habits and practice happiness.

Return to this state joy:
1. Taking a movement break
2. Jump rope or hola-hoop
3. Practice Breath of joy
4. Puppy memes

02/15/2021

Take time for yourself. This is how we show we care. Caring about yourself might actually be the one thing you haven’t taken time to do.

How?

Start your day with a glass of water
Take 5 minutes to just breath
Celebrate small wins
Take a lunch break
Stand-up and stretch
Give yourself time & space
Listen to your favorite music
End your day with a cup of tea

02/10/2021

“Now and then it's good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.”

It’s all about ...

Foundation. Foundation. Foundation.

Foundation in standing poses is created from the waist to the souls of the feet. The perineum 🤔 or the base of the pelvic floor when lifted and toned established a foundation that is not only stabile but easeful. In yoga this is known as the root lock or mula bandha.

Warrior 1 (Virabhadrasana 1) the sword wielding warrior is a posture with the whole body facing forward with a strong and intentional foundation. The legs and the hips, in a wide stance, are strong and sharp that create balance and stability. With the chest and eyes rotated forward and the arms overhead, the posture is powerful.

If you want a good story about being a warrior, look up the story of Virabhadrasana.

Curious about hip posture. Ever wonder how to hold you hips in yoga?

It begins with understanding some typical cues.

01/13/2021

Everything is energy! When we feel stressed, sad or mad we get tight. Our emotions effect our body. Over time our posture shows how we live.

With mindful breathing and yoga postures, we can start to let that sh*t go and feel better.

Judgement vs Discernment

As a yoga teacher I hear all of the time from people, “I’m not flexible enough to do yoga.” I’m sure resting this now feels much different than when it’s said. Basically, this is a form of self judgement.

Judgement is widespread in the world we live in. On social platforms it’s easy to look at a video and make a snap judgement. It doesn’t matter if we think it’s right or wrong, it degrades our sense of trust in the world and others. Over time, it causes suffering.

Good news! Our tendencies to judge ourselves and others is a habit we can change. It takes practice to discern or resolve a situation or event for what it is. Practicing yoga with a new perspective is one way to practice.

01/04/2021

When we feel good physically we feel better mentally. This is what physical strength can do for us. We feel more capable and confident. This is what getting strong in our bodies can do for anyone. Anyone can get stronger through willpower alone with equipment and a plan. But, getting strong together can be more inspiring and help create a more sustainable routine.
