Fat shots. Thin shots. Chunked chips.

A lot of those misses have nothing to do with your swing mechanics.

They come down to grip pressure.

When you're holding the club too tight, tension travels up your arms and kills your feel before the swing even starts. When it's too loose, the face twists and contact becomes a lottery. There's a happy medium for every golfer and it might be tighter or looser than what you currently think is right.

The only way to find it is to experiment. Start with your next range session and consciously play with your grip pressure on every shot. You might be surprised how quickly things clean up. ⛳

This one takes about ten seconds and immediately shows you what a proper shoulder tilt actually feels like.

Get into your golf posture, let the lead arm fall naturally, then reach it under and across toward the trail side. Hold something stable if you need to, a golf cart, a wall, anything that won't tip. Now notice two things: the lead shoulder is tracking down toward the ball, not up or across, and there's a little crunch developing on the left side of the torso.

That crunch is the feeling you're looking for in your backswing. Shoulder and hip getting closer together on the lead side. That's not staying still, that's rotating in posture, and those two things are very different.

No lipstick. No blocked chin. Just a clear, free turn with room for the arms to do their job.

Now reverse it for the follow-through. Same concept, same clearance, other side.

If you've been swinging harder trying to get more distance, here's the truth: effort is probably making it worse.

Distance doesn't come from muscle. It comes from sequence. When your body leads and your arms follow, energy naturally travels from the ground up through the swing. The club head builds speed on its own without you forcing it.

That's what the step drill teaches. Step, swing, step, swing. Body ahead of the arms every single time. When it's right, it doesn't feel hard. It feels smooth. And smooth is fast. ⛳

Grab any club or alignment stick, cross your hands, and place it high across your shoulders above the collarbone. Now turn.

Standing tall first, just feel the rotation. Then add a hip hinge forward and turn again. Notice what happens to the grip end of the club. When the shoulder tilt is right it points down toward the ball. When it's flat or you're standing too tall it stays level and your shoulder runs straight into your chin.

That's the whole problem in one simple visual. No shoulder tilt means no clearance. No clearance means no room to turn. No room to turn means a short, jammed, tension-filled backswing where the arms are trying to do a job the body never set up for.

Chin up. Shoulders tilted. Lead shoulder below trail shoulder. That's it.

Freedom and flow don't happen by accident. They happen when the geometry is right from the start.

Grab a PT band, a resistance band, anything stretchy, loop it around your back under your arms, and just rotate.

That's the drill. But here's what to watch for.

If the band goes slack, you've collapsed your arms toward your body and lost the radius that creates width, contact, and distance. If you're lifting up and running into yourself, you haven't tilted that lead shoulder down enough toward the ball. Shoulder below shoulder on the backswing. Shoulder below shoulder coming through.

When you've got that tilt and that rotation working together, the band stays taut, the arms stay connected, and there's no lipstick mark anywhere in sight.

Clean shirt. Better swing. Same drill.

The most common backswing advice in golf is to turn your shoulders more. And for most casual golfers, it's actually making things worse.

Here's why. A bigger shoulder turn only helps if your base is stable enough to support it. When you chase rotation without maintaining your posture and your base, you lose the leverage you need to unwind properly. The backswing gets longer but the downswing gets messier.

What actually creates consistency is a clean, controlled rotation within your posture. Stable lower body. Spine angle maintained. Turn that stays within your base so everything can unwind from the same place every time.

That's not a smaller swing. That's a better one. ⛳

Here's the most honest balance check in golf and it takes about three seconds.

Swing through to your finish and tap your trail toe on the ground three times. That's it.

If you can do it cleanly, you've actually transferred your weight. If you have to push off the back foot to get there, you didn't, and no amount of posing at the finish is going to cover that up.

This is one of those drills that exposes the truth immediately. Plenty of golfers can hold a finish that looks balanced. Far fewer can tap the trail toe three times without wobbling, shifting, or cheating off the back foot.

Three taps. One honest answer about where your weight actually went.

Here's how the ruler takes you from grip to alignment to impact in one connected sequence.

Thumbs centered on the edge confirms a neutral grip. Then hold it up in front of your body and check that the leading edge is square to your spine. Bow down into your golf posture and confirm it's still square when you get there. Now you know your grip is neutral, your face is square, and your alignments match before you've swung anything.

From there the tee goes in the ground and the real work starts. Get into your posture, rotate the sternum, and tap the tee out. Simple as that.

Three checkpoints stacked on top of each other, and they all flow from one prop you already have at home.
