Dixie Sailing Club hosts Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch
On Saturday, September 6, the Dixie Sailing Club hosted the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch for an introduction to sailing and day on the water.
We had a wonderful time entertaining several of the girls and their house parents.
The day began at 9:00 a.m. when the girls and house parents arrived. We had some activities for them to enjoy including rock painting which quickly became a favorite of all. They painted many rocks for themselves and to leave at the club for landscape enhancement.
Commodore, Bobby Edmond, provided a brief history of DSC and an overview of the club's members and sailboats. Don Connolly, certified sailing instructor, provided an entertaining presentation of sailing, winds, and how a sailboat uses the wind to its benefit.
Several of our members volunteered to skipper their boats to provide an on the water sailing experience for all. We sailed for over an hour around the Youngs Island, Paces Point and Wicker Point shorelines.
At noon, we had lunch provided by Keith and Jennifer Bennett, two of our veteran members. After lunch, Sara Wolf, Associate Member, provided a very interesting and engaging presentation on her adventures swimming the English Channel in June. Everyone was intrigued by and interested in her accomplishments.
At 1:30 pm, those who wanted to sail again were taken back out for an hour or more until the storms began to develop.
We all had so much fun that it was hard to pack up and end the day.
On behalf of the Dixie Sailing Club we would like to thank the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch for paying us a visit.
