The 13 Folds
While Public Law does not assign an official meaning to the specific folds, a widespread and deeply respected tradition attributes 13 symbolic meanings to them. Each fold represents a fundamental American ideal or historical value
• 1st-3rd Folds: Symbolize life, belief in eternal life, and honor for veterans who served and departed.
• 4th-7th Folds: Represent trust in God, the nation, allegiance, and tribute to the Armed Forces.
• 8th-10th Folds: Honor the fallen, womanhood/mothers, and fathers who gave their children to defend the country.
• 11th-13th Folds: Represent divine/biblical principles, with the final fold leaving the stars uppermost to recall the national motto, "In God We Trust".
The Shape of the Fold
Once completely folded and tucked, the flag takes on the appearance of a tricorne hat. This shape is a nod to the Revolutionary War, specifically honoring General George Washington's soldiers and Captain John Paul Jones's sailors, commemorating those who preserved the nation's foundational rights.
