Dear Friends of Bill,

Bill, our dad, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Nov. 12th, surrounded by loving family. My sisters and I wanted to express our gratitude to you, his beloved cycling community. His professional and personal relationships with you over the past 3 decades meant the world to him. Dad had a passion for cycling and turned a hobby into a career post-retirement from the U.S. Air Force (COL). He started as a bike mechanic and then followed his fascination for the physics of cycling to become a world-renowned master wheel builder. Dad found so much fulfillment and purpose from mentoring others and imparting his knowledge and experience. Our hearts are warmed by the sharing of your stories on this page and invite you to share on this post, as well. Thank you, all, for being his community.

Even if you are not an engineer, if you are a wheel builder and enough of a nerd to get excited about bicycle wheels, you will appreciate the humor of this t-shirt. I ordered one for myself.

Here is an example of what isn’t what it appears to be. Customer comes in with a wheel he wants trued. Watch out. This Hyper wheel is built with carbon spokes. What looks like a normal ni**le, although with small wrench flats, is not a normal ni**le. It is permanently affixed to the spoke, and if you use a bladed spoke holder to keep the bladed spoke in place and try to turn the “ni**le”, you will break the spoke. Instead, you need to use a spoke wrench to keep the “ni**le” from turning while truing the wheel from the back using a 5.5 mm hex wrench. And, if the wheel was set up tubeless, you will have to charge the customer enough to cover the added labor plus new rim tape and sealant.

Wouldn't it be nice if wheel specifications were accurate? How many times have you seen the heads of alloy ni**les breaking off because the spokes did not extend through the head? It's an easy problem to fix at the production level, but expensive for the customer at the bike shop level.

Fentanyl is all over the news and rightly so. I just wish people who should know better would pronounce it properly. It's not fen -tan-ALL, it's fen-tan-EEL. To an organic chemist, fen-tan-ALL would suggest that it is an alcohol, which it is not. I know: picky picky
