It’s mid October, and you know what that means? We’re pretty much full swing into what some call “The Holiday Season” … which to me is 3 or 4 holidays but to some it’s 3 months of eating off the rails and then “swearing” to do something about their health in the New Year … Or Next Year.

So that’s one option…

…Here are three others that actually add to your health and will help you build momentum going into the new year and through this season.

1. Decide that maintaining is gaining.

Maybe join a gym, maybe start an exercise program but don’t worry about the scale.

See where you are today and decide to not gain any weight over the next 2.5 months.

That would be a huge success for many as it’s far from the norm - where most will gain 10-15 during this time. 😕

2. Decide you do want to start a fat loss plan and strategically use those holidays as markers in time.

You could likely lose 5 pounds before Halloween if you started now and had the right action plan. 😉

Then you’ll build momentum to power you through the next two months and when Jan 1st comes you won’t be feeling behind and like you let yourself down again. You’ll have a head start and already to that much closer to your goals.

3. Decide you want to build muscle and strength and gain weight during this time. Bulking season anyone? (Or Bulking SZN as I like to think about it.)

If you’re going to be eating more food, and the cooler environment lends itself to weight gain and moving less anyway - then why not use that to your advantage and match the calorie surplus with an intelligently designed exercise program.

The added food will fuel performance in the gym and gains outside of it.

And then we you do decide to trim down later in 2024 you’ll have built a solid base of lean muscle tissue and strength that you can then use to your advantage.

Health Check In…

…I recently went to my 6 month dental appointment for my routine check up and cleaning and I was asked this question:

“Have you had any recent changes to your health?”

To which I instantly replied:

“Continually improving.”

They said they hadn’t ever heard that answer and it got me thinking how the question is usually answered with a “No.”

…Or perhaps a list of undesirable changes due to lifestyle…

So if I asked you this question point blank, what would your response be?

Take a moment to consider your health and the direction it’s going in.

…Are you happy with how you look, feel and perform?

…Does the answer to the question scare you or excite you?

Regardless of where you are today I assume you a brighter healthier future can be yours!

I know! I used to be over 250 pounds. Today I’m right around 180… I’ve fallen on hard times. I stopped exercising completely before and I was healthier before that…

…That transformation took place in 2013. That was my year. And yet today, I continue to improve and seek transformation.

I’m about 20 pounds down since late May.

I also help and coach people to have the same lasting transformations.

A recent client of mine lost over 10 pounds while gaining muscle and strength. They have boosted their energy and confidence and are excited to conquer the day and continue to accomplish their goals.

If giving people pills was the epitome of health we wouldn’t be one of the sickest countries in the world.❤️‍🩹

Unfortunately our “health” system works backwards from death to disease and diagnosis instead of forward from birth to life and longevity.

Prevention is the future of health care, but you have to care about your health for that to matter…

💭 If you had a rare disease your doctor would need to “diagnosis, treat and cure” that disease and you would be grateful for their saving work.

🤔 Sadly, many of our modern ailments are lifestyle related, which means that you’re going to have to do the saving work.

The diagnosis is already known by practitioner and patient:

✔️Record high obesity rates at 42.6% projected to be over 50% by 2030
✔️1 in 3 have metabolic syndrome
✔️1 in 10 have type 2 diabetes
✔️1 in 4 will die of heart disease
✔️60% of cancer is lifestyle related
✔️Childhood obesity continues to rise with 19.3% of our young aged 2-19, have obesity.

Why are we so sick and getting sicker?

Lifestyle. Choices.

That means YOU are the most important person in the room- not your doctor.

We all need to do better. We need to address the lifestyle changes necessary for complete healing ❤️‍🩹 instead of putting bandages over bleeding wounds in the form of pills.

TL;DR - Lifestyle related diseases and obesity continue to climb to record high numbers. If only there was something we could do… 🤔

Taking a look within and discovering your deeper meaning can help supply you with all the motivation you need.

It’s hard to do something when you don’t have “DEEP WHYS.”

But if you find your purpose… then passion will follow.

The word passion come from the Latin word ‘pati’ which means ‘to suffer.’

Therefore, possessing passion means you’re willing to put the work in to achieve your desired outcomes … it means you’re likely going to suffer along the way … but you’re willing to put forth the effort for the greater reward.

Fall in love with the process and the outcome will follow. That is the discipline.

Cultivating your passion and purpose create meaning and that supplies motivation.

September 1st Is The New January 1st… 👀

Are you ready to run towards your goals and crush 2023?

If so, focus on setting behavior goals and not just outcome goals!

What you’re running towards is the outcome. You actually running towards it is the behaviors you’ll need to do in order to reach the desired outcome. The process. 😉

Your specific goals are unique to you and your desires but there’s something all goals have in common: a beginning and an end… Unfortunately, most people start with the end in mind but never reverse-engineer all the steps involved back to TODAY.

Have you made resolutions? What are your goals?

Would they fall under the outcome goal or the behavior goal category?

Here are a few examples of outcome goals:

📍Lose 20 pounds
📍Get bigger arms
📍Be healthier
📍Become a better person this year

Unfortunately, these are the types of goals people set and then set themselves up for failure because these only focus on the outcomes, which we cannot entirely control.

…But what we can control are the behaviors that lead to these outcomes.

Let’s look at some behaviors that would lead to the desired outcomes above:

📍Join a gym, hire a coach, follow a plan, and become accountable
📍Follow a program that prioritizes arm training and eat to support growth
📍Eat 5+ servings of vegetables daily
📍Volunteer at a homeless shelter every month

With that in mind what were some goals you’d like to accomplish?

And more importantly, what are the behaviors that will lead you there?

Take some time to write down your goals, break them down into skills, then figure out one action habit that you’ll need to do daily to build that skill to reach the goal.

NUTRIGEN - Complete Nutrition Support 08/29/2023

Here are my top 6 supplements, but before that let’s discuss this topic and give some context. 🙂

Supplements are just that… They are meant to supplement.

Supplement: something that completes or enhances something when added to it.

When it comes to supplementation I’ve seen two camps in my years of coaching…

Some who don’t take anything and won’t but would likely benefit from a few essentials… And then I’ve seen people with every obscure bottle of various trace minerals, MLM packages that “failed them again” and a variety of other pills and powders too numerous to name.

The one camp takes nothing…
While the other camp I imagine takes so many ‘somethings’ as a way to convince themselves that they’re doing something.

But as mentioned above supplements supplement. And what do they supplement?

Hopefully a sound Good Nutrition plan, a healthy active lifestyle, and meaningful strength training. Not to mention the rest, recovery, stress management and sleep hygiene aspects that should be nurtured as well.

Still supplements can be helpful and beneficial. The key lies in this truth:

There are 2 categories of supplements.

Essential. And non-essential or novel.

Too many people put too much emphasis on that last 1% without making sure they have the 99% covered first.

Your Aunt ever ask you about apple cider vinegar while she still eats pints of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream? Yea… The ACV isn’t likely to do anything “magical” in that case… A kitchen makeover, keeping a food diary and some honesty and accountability would though. 😉

I digress…

What makes something “essential” is that the body has to get it from an outside source.

This is where we get the terms essential amino acids, non-essential amino acids and essential fatty acids etc.

If your body has enough of the essential amino acids (the building blocks of protein you eat) then it can create what it needs within… the non-essential.

So with that here are the 5-6 categories of essentials.

In no particular order:

1. Essential Amino Acids. (EAAs + Proteins) This is where a high quality whey protein comes in place to help fill in the gaps as many people fall short on them daily protein intake.

2. Essential Fatty Acids. (EFAs usually EPA + DHA) typically in the form of fish oil of algae. Here’s a great fish oil capsule product that also has vitamin D, K2 and nattokinase that helps with cardiovascular health and much more.

3. Carb powders. While carbohydrates aren’t technically “essential” it doesn’t mean they aren’t beneficial in the right contexts and goals. Adding EAAs, Proteins and Carbs to a heavy training session is a great idea for recovery and growth in muscle building is your goal. Creatine also make a great addition here.

Now that we’ve covered the 3 macronutrients: proteins, fats and carbs we’ll move on to vitamins and minerals.

4. and 5. A Great Multivitamin and or Greens Drink (fiber, phytonutrients and phytochemicals) can make a world of difference in closing any nutritional gaps someone may have while they transition to a healthier eating plan.

MAXIMIZE YOUR BAND PULL APARTS⁣

This popular movement is great for shoulder health and upper back strength.⁣
It fits well in warmups, supersets or even finishers. 🥵⁣

Many would get a better ROI from it with an intentional setup, particular executions and planned progressions.⁣

✅THE SETUP⁣

📍Root your feet through the floor⁣
📍Exhale your air out to lower the ribs⁣
📍And feel your abs engage.⁣
📍Squeeze your abs and glutes to activate the core and maintain the “closed scissors” position. 🦍⁣
📍Irradiate tension through the body to send more force to the target area. 🎯⁣
📍Grab the band loosely with fists 👊 straight in front of the shoulders- you may need a lighter band for this!⁣
📍Keep the elbows locked!⁣

✅THE EXECUTION⁣

📍Pull the band apart⁣
📍Bring the shoulder blades together⁣
📍Squeeze on top⁣
📍Lower slower and⁣
📍Return to the start point with control.⁣
📍Add external rotation while pulling apart to maximize the effectiveness of this exercise. Play around with protraction on 🔝 too.⁣

❌One problem with staple warmup exercises like this and the hip circle is that people rarely progress them and what was once a great movement becomes a stale exercise in going through the motions.⁣

✅PROGRESSIONS⁣

📍Band pull down and apart⁣
📍Brady Band Series⁣

…And the list goes on.⁣

Here my client is performing the⁣

📍Single arm band pull apart! ⁣

I really like this exercise for building stability on the static side and it opens up (quite literally) more options for the dynamic side- we can add in some thoracic rotation for example which is also a common warmup movement.⁣

You’ll also be able to feel the lower trap working more. You can even protract the static side to hit some serratus.⁣

This variation takes a rear delt and upper back exercise and adds the possibility of rib cage mobility, lower trap and serratus work! Now that, my friend, is how you progress and build an exercise.⁣

Exercise protects against many modern ailments: heart disease, type II diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, cancers, mental health- you know, all those “co-morbidities” you may have been hearing about lately...

And to add to the ongoing list of awesome 😎 reasons why you might want to consider exercising regularly it also helps with immunity via exercise induced leukocytosis.

If we could bottle and sell exercise you’d be completely insane not to take it. If only there way some way we could get all these amazing 😉 benefits... (psst, it’s called work.)

P.S. It’s probably a good thing it can’t be bottled, who knows what Big Pharma would charge for that pretty pill! Oh, and sometimes (read most times) it’s good to get the happy drugs from within.

Endogenous > exogenous

TL;DR Your body gives you happy drugs when you move it and rewards you with a host of benefits.

What is the opposite of muscle atrophy?⁣

Hypertrophy. 💪⁣

How do we preserve our muscle mass and strength so we don’t lose it as we age?? (…Also known as sarcopenia.)⁣

We Strength Train + Resist Gravity. 🙌⁣

Do you want to have independence and vitality in your later years of life?⁣

✔️ Walk. Squat. Get Strong(er). 🔥⁣
✔️ Build your aerobic base.⁣
✔️ Eat well to fuel performance and longevity. 🥩🥬⁣

Think about these activities as deposits in your body’s health bank account. 💭⁣

Ask yourself: “What do I want to be able to do when I’m 100 years old?”⁣

And do more of that. TODAY.⁣

Strength train for life: quality and quantity.⁣

True longevity and durability will take time and effort to build.⁣

But sickness is harder than health.⁣
Weakness is harder than strength.⁣
