$199 for a power meter. That’s about as affordable as it gets.

The Stages Shimano 105 R7000 replaces your left crank arm. If you’re already running a Shimano Hollowtech II crankset, you’re most of the way there — you swap one arm and you’re done.

±1.5% accuracy, 200+ hours on a replaceable coin cell, ANT+ and Bluetooth, and it only adds 15 grams.

Two things to check before you order:

It measures left leg only and doubles it. Fine for most people training against themselves, but it’s not dual-sided.

Frame clearance. You need about 10mm between the crank arm and the chainstay for the sensor to clear. If you’re at 7-9mm, a bottom bracket spacer usually solves it.

It fits R7000 and other Shimano 11-speed Hollowtech II cranksets. It’ll physically install on 12-speed too, but the q-factor is 2mm narrower on that side.

Two things to know before you order:

The layups. Lightweight is the 92g version, rated to 90kg rider plus bike (about 198 lbs). Performance adds 20-35 grams and takes it to 130kg (about 287 lbs). If you’re near the limit, get the Performance.

It can’t be cut. Length is a decision you make once, so measure before you order. Minimum insertion depth applies.

Which cycling metrics actually tell you whether you’re getting faster?

Some are incredibly useful for measuring progress. Others are helpful only in the right context...and a few might be getting more attention than they deserve.

Someone said I got this wrong on my power meter rankings. He’s right — but so was I.

There are two different questions you can ask about your power numbers, and most people lump them together.

Accuracy: are the numbers correct?
Consistency: are they the same every day?

If your power meter reads 10 watts high every single ride, it’s wrong — but it’s wrong the same way every time. Like a bathroom scale that’s 3 lbs off. You can still track progress.

So for training against yourself on one bike, consistency is what matters. He’s right about that.

Accuracy comes back the moment your numbers have to match something outside your bike — racing indoors, moving a power meter between bikes, buying a new one, following a plan built on real watts.

Split apart: consistency is S tier, accuracy is A.
