Definitely needed some time to mentally unpack this weekend. Our last national ever. And of course, a nor’easter rolls in. We were not where we wanted to be in points going into this weekend. We wanted to at least have the chance to race and leave it all on the track. The guys worked their butts off to give us a track. NASCAR Youth Series did everything they could to get this race in. Ran heats all the way through lower mains in one day on Friday. Every time they got the track run in on Saturday for A mains it would rain again. Racing finally started at I think 8pm and we got done at like 1am I believe.
Going into this our reasonable goal was to make a top 5 in points to make it to the banquet in Indy. A championship was pretty much out the window from where we were. We definitely had our best national showing ever this weekend and I am so proud of our driver and our crew chief. All cars were in the A mains which is a feat in itself.
🟢Light World Formula - started p3, finished 6th - this was one of the earlier races and the track was definitely slippery after all the rain, everyone was just doing what they could - finished 6th in points
🟢Sr Animal - started p8, finished 4th - track started coming in and the car was definitely tight but that finish was enough to put us 5th in points and punch our ticket to Indy! 🥳
🟢Lt 160 - this was a total heartbreaker…started p3, was running a pretty comfortable 3rd with 9 laps to go and his left rear hub broke completely off sending his wheel flying…we got him into the hot chute and everyone busted their butts to get him back out but they closed the pits right as we got him off the cart and were about to push back out, ending our race…thank you to everyone who jumped in to help us try to get him back out…if he had kept that 3rd he would have landed 2nd in points and only needed to finish 8th to be 5th in points which would have been doable if we got him back out…ended up 6th in points…I know that’s part of racing but it stings a little more when it’s your last national and takes you out of points.
🟢Formula Mod - driver shook off the disappointment of the 160 and drove the heck out of this car on a tough track…started on the pole, led about half the race but the car behind was just a little faster and was able to squeak by, thankfully Hunter was able to settle back into second and finished there. This class has been so frustrating all national season…he’s won every heat race and started on the pole of every feature and has led a ton of laps but just not been able to finish with the results that reflect the speed…and the first national this is the one his oil plug melted out of after he led half the race…so glad to finally get this one on the podium!
Congratulations to all of our friends on their championships…we are truly so excited for each and every one of you and look forward to celebrating with you in Indy!
