Mike Dunn with a cool video. In theory proper lifting should definitely help! Bad practices like excessive loading, bad cueing, and no focus on patterning, will negatively affect the shot.

In The Game Hoops

Athletes at this level are so tuned in with their craft. When a new stimulus is introduced it may “throw off” their skill in the short term. Steph touch based on a couple of ways to prevent this. Train with balance/symmetry. Don’t overload any one area, like just hitting upper body. Also, with athletes I like to get them to think about movement patterns rather than muscle parts. It helps their mind integrate the strength throughout the body and transfer. The exercises don’t change much, but the cueing does.

Lifting is multifaceted. Depending on intensity and volume it can build strength and power or even be used as recovery or tissue prep. I’m not their coach so I’m guessing at a clip on Instagram, but it looks as though through context clues of timing around the World Cup and perceived intensity they are using it for recovery and tissue prep.

Whether it’s fair or not more is asked from the strength coaches/trainer nowadays. Much is asked from us in the minimal time we get with an athlete or client. How do you be the most efficient at this task?

I personally never mix strength training with processing speed work. When they are in The weight room they are there for strength and power. When I work speed and agility training this is where I get more of the processing speed work in conjunction with their speed work. Reactive speed and agility drills and drills done on visual commands are some basic ways to accomplish or introduce this.
