Tonight’s August monthly meeting included a lively presentation by Steven C. Wright on his book The Weight I Carried: Hiking Through Grief and Healing on the Appalachian Trail. Our upcoming calendar is still developing so keep an eye on our website for future events!

Glad to get out on the trail yesterday before it heated up too much and after Appalachian Trail Conservancy's ridge runner for central PA identified 5 new blowdowns on the Allentown Hiking Club's section of AT south of Fort Franklin Road. In a good half-day's work, my capable crew and I were able to hike the ~5.5 miles and clear all 5 blowdowns. Saturday it was a humid day but that did not stop our hikers from enjoying the Sand Springs - Tom Lowe Trails Loop Hike with a lunch visit to the Eagle's Nest Shelter on the Appalachian Trail.

If you ever wanted to meet interesting hikers with big hearts who enjoy the forest and sharing lots of sweat and laughs then pleased join us for one of our hikes or cool events !

Evening 4 mile loop around Leaser Lake. Two of us paddled afterwards and one did a second loop. Cloudy, but nice evening to be out.

There are certainly some great day hikes in Pennsylvania along the Appalachian Trail! The Allentown Hiking Club maintains 10.3 miles between Tri-County Corner and Bake Oven Road, which includes the Allentown Shelter.

Yesterday’s steamy temperatures and nearby thunderstorms didn’t deter folks from enjoying the club’s annual summer picnic. There was plenty of good food to enjoy along with great conversation. And as is often the case, we were treated to a brilliant sunset to close out the evening!

Another great trail care weekend with the Keystone Trails Association and The PA Wilds. The trails don’t maintain themselves, so lend a hand if you can!

After yesterday’s rains the forecast for today still contained some showers, but all we saw were blue skies! Temperatures were on the warm side but on the ridge the breezes kept us cool and the views kept us in awe. A beautiful lunch stop at Hackers Falls plus a visit to the tallest waterfall in PA, Raymondskill Falls, made for a brilliant trek!

Every year the Allentown Hiking Club offers trail magic midweek specifically targeted at thru and section hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Over the last two days we fed and watered 30 hikers and encouraged them all on their journey towards Mount Katahdin in Maine.
