🌊 65 Great Lakes drownings in 2026 — and the year isn’t over. 🌊

As of September 7, the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project reports 65 drownings in the Great Lakes this year, including 7 in Lake Huron.

And something important to remember: that number is only Great Lakes drownings. It does not include drownings in Michigan’s inland lakes, rivers, ponds, pools, or other bodies of water.

Living in Northeast Michigan means water is part of our lives. We boat. We fish. We camp. We swim. Our kids grow up surrounded by water.

That’s exactly why swim lessons and water-safety education aren’t just another activity—they’re life skills.

At Alpena Plaza Pool, we want children to learn more than strokes. We want them to know how to:
🏊 Float and stay calm
🌊 Recognize dangerous water conditions
🛟 Understand life jacket safety
🤝 Reach or throw—don’t go
💨 Understand offshore winds and the dangers of inflatables
💙 Build the swimming skills and confidence that could help them in an emergency

No child is drown-proof, and swim lessons never replace active adult supervision. But education, swimming ability, proper life jacket use, and knowing what to do when something goes wrong can give our kids another layer of protection.

Since 2010, 1,480 people have drowned in the Great Lakes.

Those aren’t just statistics. They’re people, families and communities.

Please teach your children about water safety. Get them into swim lessons. Talk about what to do BEFORE an emergency happens.
