The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail didn’t exactly roll out the red carpet.

But the Ladies of the House showed up, put one foot in front of the other, and kept moving. Through the climbs. Through the miles. Through the exhaustion. When it got hard, we got harder.

No shortcuts. No quitting.

Just 70 miles of grit, strength, teamwork, and a whole lot of determination.

I’m proud to have shared this one with these four badass women.

Like to walk? Like to walk with your friends? Like to walk with your friends for a good cause?

We have the event for you!?!

Refuge Youth Network is a Christian youth-development organization serving teenagers in Blair County.

They provide youth camps, mentoring programs, relationships building, Christian ministry and various outreach programs. They are doing great stuff for our kids.

And you can help! By walking with some friends on October 24th from 7:00am-8:30am!! It’s that easy.

You and 4 friends for a team of 5, at a cost of $25 each, will join a team for sponsored by a local business, to walk as many laps on the Gorilla House Gym outdoor track as you can in 90 minutes. You can walk, jog or run.

We are making this into a little party in the backyard to raise money for Refuge to continue to lift up and support the kids in our community.

On September 11th, 2001 I was stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC

I was active duty and pregnant with my youngest daughter; Sydney was 16 months old; and Ray was a police officer for Jacksonville Police Department.

Things were a lot different in 2001, there wasn’t any social media, neither Ray nor I had a cell phone yet, and I rarely listened to the radio. I didn’t hear about American civilians on American soil being under attack until I got back from my lunch break. My Commanding Officer told me to go get Sydney, go home and check in with the duty every two hours. Everyone else was going on running guard.

I got Sydney and went home and didn’t hear from Ray for several hours. He stopped by our house, which was a block from the PD and checked on us and made sure I didn’t have to do running guard….pregnant with a toddler and the closest family was 8 hours away…I was spared.

There was no TV. Every station was bars and tone, with an occasional news cast interruption. Which was brief and lacked any concrete information.

It took days to sort out what had happened. American life came to a screeching halt and everything was very, very quiet.

So many historical lessons were learned that day. We should never forget how deeply the events of 9/11/01 cut into our sense of confidence and the safety and barrier we thought the American soil provided.
