Wanting to breed a draft cross? What are you hoping to produce? This is a very important question. Many people are new to the world of drafts and draft crosses. I am hoping this will help on your decisions when breeding.
Our heavy breeds-Belgians, Clydesdales, Percherons—have been bred over the centuries for very specific purposes (and there are MANY other heavy breeds). As a result, their conformation is extremely different than many riding breeds, including the Quarter Horse. The biggest example being turned in hocks (or close hocks) which are desirable in big pulling horses. This type of conformation helps the horse set against weight and not bow a tendon, etc. However, close hocked horses are absolutely NOT desired in most riding horses. If you didn’t do your homework in searching for a draft stallion, you may be very disappointed in the lovely foal you are blessed with only because draft conformation may not be exactly what you are looking for.
These heavy breeds are also very tall and typically range in height from 17 to 19 hands. This also is not what most people desire in a riding horse.
One of the main reasons people are breeding draft crosses in today’s market is for an athletic horse with heavy bone and that wonderful draft mind and temperament. Remember that drafts are considered the “gentle giants”. Drafts and draft crosses are capable of carrying a much heavier rider and since we know and understand that there actually is a MAXIMUM weight riding horses can carry, bigger people can ride these awesome horses! The general formula being that riding horses can carry roughly 20% of their body weight but in contrast, can pull insane amounts of weight. By the way, a draft cross is not a new commodity. These draft crosses, called sport horses, have been around a very long time. You will see many of these sport horses competing on the elite level in the eventing show ring including the Olympics. For example, an Irish Sport Horse, or an Irish Hunter, is a draft cross bred from the Irish Draught (draft horse) and the Thoroughbred.
So, how to you get the draft cross you are wanting with the temperament, mind, and conformation that is so sought after? Consider the Gypsy Vanner light draft. They are heavy b***d and are considered the “people sized” draft horse. Gypsy Vanners range in size from 13 to 16 hands. The breed standard considers movement and temperament in the standard evaluation of the proper Gypsy Vanner. Because movement is so important, it is a crucial part of the evaluation process of rating these gorgeous horses. They also have a refined head so the Roman nose seen in so many heavy breeds is undesirable in the breed standard of the Gypsy Vanner.
If you are interested in more information, please feel free to contact me! For the people who want to know where I am getting my information on draft horse conformation, I am referencing a book, SO YOU WANT TO SHOW DRAFT HORSES, which breaks down conformation and was recommended to me several years ago by the Clydesdale Breeders of the USA. Clydesdales do not have a written breed standard. Even though they have halter classes judging conformation, Clydesdale conformation is more of an idea passed down through generations that basically is about desireable characteristics for the optimal performance horse. The book SO YOU WANT TO SHOW DRAFT HORSES, breaks down desired conformation of Belgians, Clydesdales, and Percherons.
In comparison, the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society has a very detailed breed standard and also has a pictorial tutorial of desired conformation as well as a whole video clinic on conformation and movement available for download on their website.
