Did you know that different animals have different numbers of chromosomes? Humans have a total of 46 chromosomes (23 pairs), however, some species only have a few while other species have hundreds!

The Atlas Blue Butterfly holds the record for the most chromosomes. These small insects have 458 chromosomes total! This includes two pairs of s*x chromosomes. Meanwhile, other insects have as little as 2 chromosomes, or just one pair.

Chromosome amounts are incredibly diverse and do not relate to the size of the species. In fact, a potato has more chromosomes than a human, with 48 total!

While the number of chromosomes greatly differs by species, the number of genes ( the instruction manual for creating an organism), does not always vary as much. For example, Atlas Blue Butterflies, Humans, Cats and Horses all have about 20,000-22,000 genes.
