Had a group of 36 students get their hunter education certificates on Saturday the 15th! There are still open spots on the 29th for another field day, so go sign up after you complete your on-line portion!!

he Ames Youth Air Rifle 2026/2027 season is soon starting and the program is enrolling new members. This program is an American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program provided in partnership with the Ames Izaak Walton League. It teaches youth rifle safety and marksmanship and lets youth participate in an Olympic skill sport while fostering healthy competition. All interested youth between the ages 12 to 18 years old are welcome. Shooters must be able to safely handle and fire a full size competition target .177 caliber air rifle.

Practices are weekly on Sundays, 12:30-3pm. This season's kick off meeting is September 13. Contact coach Cort Pahl ([email protected]) for more information.

Skill levels of participants vary from beginners learning safety basics to winners of the Legion-affiliate National Championship, which consists of regional champs competing in a shoulder-to-shoulder match. The program is supported completely through the generosity of Ames American Legion Post 37 and Ames Izaak Walton League. Rifles, pellets, indoor range and supplies are all provided. As a fully sponsored program, there are no fees for participating.

We are also creating a new shooting course for younger children eight years old and up. This will be a much shorter course (7-10 classes) and is a great introduction to competitive shooting appropriate for younger ages. In this course we utilize special target Daisy BB guns. Please email Cort Pahl at the above email address if you have children interested. If you have visited our facility since the torential rains the first weekend of July, you are likely aware of the state of the washout and ruts on the driveway. We should be addressing this later this week. Please take it very slowly as you go up and down the hill between the gate and chapterhouse.

Also, the culvert/crossing between the 100 yard and 200 yard birms has been washed away making the 200 yard targets inaccessible. We are working with contractors to address this issue but might be later this month or early August before it is resolved.

We have found a misplaced firearm on our range from late Friday/Saturday on Sunday. Looks like it was wet from Saturday rain. It is stored on the Ikes property for now. Please IM us if you can Identify the owner.

Board member elections

At the July board meeting, we will be seeking members to serve on the Ames IKES board. This is a 3 year commitment for those who are elected. We have 6 current board members, some of whom will not be seeking reelection so seats are available.

The board consists of 18 members, 6 of whom rotate out every year (hence the 3 year cycle). The board regularly meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:15pm and the meetings generally last roughly an hour.

If you are interested in serving on the board, or if you would like to nominate someone to serve, please come to the July board meeting (July 7, 6:15 PM) to make your interest known.

Project Appleseed will be coming to the Ames Izaak Walton League, Saturday and Sunday, June 13 & 14, 2026. This rifle marksmanship clinic is open to Ames Ikes members and the general public. Participants will learn and develop new skills related to the craft of rifle marksmanship, including steady hold factors of prone, seated and offhand positions, six steps of firing the shot and natural point of aim.

The outdoor pistol and rifle range at the IKES will be closed these days for this event from sun up until 5pm each day by approval of the Board of Directors.
