Wednesday night class! Quick tip: when you do a lap sao (pull), don’t punch low. This move exposes you if you attack the body because both of your hands will be low. It opens up for the opponent to counter. Keep training hard!

Side kick to the knee! This technique is great for closing the distance between you and your opponent. And if the kick lands it can cause a lot of damage. One thing to keep in mind—always remain balanced when kicking. Don’t lean too much into the kick. You might loose balance and become an easier target for the opponent.

Here’s an easy drill for kids— For blocking a hook punch.... Use an open palm (so the kids won’t get hurt) and swing a hook. Aim towards the back of the head like you’re trying to grab the neck. You should also apply enough pressure so it simulates a real hook punch. This drill keeps the kids safe while giving them realistic pressure and attack to train against. Hope this helps!

Practicing blocks: make sure you practice blocking punches. Wing Chun can not be used far away, so you must step in. While stepping in your enemy will punch you so you must learn and practice a lot of blocking. Once blocking is good, counter attacks should be the focus.

Defense while bridging (closing the distance). Wing Chun is a short ranged fighting style. You must practice your defense as you step in. It is very dangerous walking in to punches if the defense is bad. Once the distance is closed, Wing Chun attacks and counters can be used effectively to pressure and hit the opponent. To train this, start slow and increase resistance, speed, variation, and power as you get better and better.

Good Chi Sao starts with proper position of the B**g Sao and Tan Sao (Left hand in video), and the F**k Sao and Ding Sau (right hand in video). Knowing proper position should allow practitioners to feel openings (instead of only creating openings). This is useful in fighting when the opponent block your punches, you can feel the opening of the opponent’s defense and strike by relying on the sense of feel. Once good position is practiced, simple attacks and defenses are introduced. The higher the chi sao skill level, the easier it is to dominate in the close range.

Chi Sao footage. Chi sao/ Gor Sao (sticky hands) is extremely important in Wing Chun. It is an integral part of the curriculum because it teaches the practitioners to relax, react to resistance, develop reflexes, train techniques, find rhythm/ timing, and develop new techniques. Chi sao is also a form of sparring where both practitioner starts touching. Don’t just use chi sao as a drill, or you won’t develop reflexes for real fights.

Sifu Jason teaching BJJ at our studio. If you only know a striking art, you must learn some form of grappling. Without balance, an opponent can easily exploit your weakness.

[Part 2] How to block a hook punch using a Biu sao (darting hand). Make sure you do ALL 3 details: 1) elbow shoulder height and point outwards 2) hands are eye level 3) hand points in front of shoulder not center line.

Happy training!

[Part 1] How to block a hook punch using a Biu sao (darting hand). Biu sau is not only used for attacking, it can also be used to block round or straight punches (coming from side angles). To use this affectively you must do ALL 3 things mentioned in video (plus other things), otherwise Biu will fail.
Be sure to watch part 2. Full video will be on our YouTube channel!

Some chi sau footage. A lot of people stop right away after the hands disconnect. That is a bad habit! Make sure you continue to block or attack so you get used to people disconnecting with you and hitting. ()
