Each were named ASAA’s DII Outstanding Athlete of the Meet. Each were selected to be our Alaska Athlete of the Week co-winners.

Also receiving votes: The Bailey girls of the South High girls soccer team, Unalakleet track star Ourea Busk, North Pole HS baseball player Stephen Langer, Dimond baseball player Dax O’Brien, and Colony softball player Taylor Passard.

Passard wins Gatorade Alaska Player of the Year, helps Colony join South, Chugiak, Sitka in quarters 06/05/2026

Just a freshman, Taylor Passard is just too good to ignore.

The Colony softball superstar on Friday became the first freshman to win Gatorade Alaska Player of the Year. The day before, the shortstop belted two homers and led the Knights to two wins at the ASAA Division I state tournament in Fairbanks.

On Thursday, Passard helped the Knights go 1-1 in pool play before beating Service 17-9 in the quarterfinals during which she went yard and matched her season high with six RBIs.

In three games on the day, she went 8-for-12 with two home runs, a triple, double and 11 RBIs. And that’s why she’s considered the best player in the state.

West Valley snapped a 14-game overall losing streak at state dating back to 2015, Juneau ended its five-game skid in the first round going back to 2018 and Dimond advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since 2011.

A-grade game and GPA get Gaines attention of Harvard and others 06/03/2026

Kennedi Gaines is a blur on the basketball court. Quicker than quick, she blows by defenders like they were standing still or zigzags around them like a slalom skier.

The Bartlett scoring machine has piled up as many as 52 points in a game and totaled 1,409 in her first two seasons of high school, putting her on pace to break the state’s all-time girls record. In the classroom, Gaines remains idle, soaking up knowledge like a sponge, yet applying the same fire and desire she brings to the hardwood.
