There is no substitute for strength training.

Summer is here and it’s tempting to think you can take all of your workouts outdoors and get the same results with your fitness.

Running, hiking, biking, kayaking and swimming are all fantastic exercise options, but they can’t replicate the unique benefits of lifting weights in the gym.

We love spending more of our time hiking and biking during the summer months, so we will gladly trade a day in the gym for a day on the trails.

💪🏻 The summer season in Alaska is short, and we want to maximize our time outdoors without compromising strength, so we prioritize at least two whole body strength workouts a week.

This is where setting clear goals, having a plan, and following a solid training program are so important.

Don’t skip the gym this summer. The benefits of strength training are invaluable 🏋🏼‍♂️ www.figarellesfitness.com

🍃 Did you know that spending time in nature has been shown to improve mental and physical health, while improving social cohesion in a community? Just hearing the sound of water flowing reduces anxiety and promotes feelings of relaxation.

We are fortunate to have easy access to nature and wildlife. In the heart of Anchorage, the Campbell and Chester Creek trail systems provide abundant opportunities to walk, bike and run year round.

Right now, these fragile spaces need our help.

🚮 Please consider getting out on the streets, trails and creeks throughout town to pick up trash. There are lots of opportunities this month to go solo or with a group and show love to our beautiful city.

You’ll get some exercise and you’ll be doing a good thing for the community! Matson will be giving away $5,000 in prizes to those who register and submit a photo.

We are taking full advantage of this early Spring season and getting outside to clean up our streets, trails, creeks and parks around Anchorage! Yesterday, we bagged 17.5 LB of trash in about an hour.

We’ll be organizing group clean-ups during our snow free months, so feel free to join us. It’s a fun way to get in your daily steps, explore new trails around town, and take care of our community.

Please consider adopting a trail or roadway in your area, it’s a rewarding opportunity to make a difference 🚮

3 things I wish I knew before I started running 👇🏻

1️⃣ Having strong glutes and a stable core are important to protect your lower back, hips, knees and ankles.

- A thoughtfully designed full body strength training program can help reduce injury risk and improve running efficiency.

- If you’re a runner, incorporate at least two strength training workouts a week.

2️⃣ Make single leg balance and strength a priority. When you’re running, you’re on one leg 100% of the time. It only make sense to strength train on one leg regularly.

- Include at least one true single leg exercise in your routine twice a week along with one split squat or lunge variation.

Some of our favorites:

- The single leg RDL.
- Skaters (frontal plane Plyometrics).
- Single leg hip thrust (floor or bench).
- Bulgarian split squats.
- All lunge variations (forward, reverse and lateral).

3️⃣ Regular Zone 2 cardio sessions like in the incline walking on the treadmill, or something similar, will help lower your resting and working heart rates over time.

- This allows you to be more efficient in how you utilize fuel sources like stored fat and glycogen.

- A lower heart rate will help decrease your sweat rate, making it less likely you’ll need to chug water while running. Of course, post-run you’ll want to rehydrate well, and include electrolytes.
