As we enter moose hunting season, we’re reminded of the knowledge and teachings our Elders have shared about the animals, the land, and the way we care for what we harvest.
Elders have said all living things have sense. Animals are able to smell, able to hear, able to talk, just like us humans. Anything that you harvest, “if you’re going to bury it, you have to let them face the east so they can see the sun rise. Because God calls us back, he’s going to call us from over there. So, everyone want to be facing that way.” — Angie Kameroff, Sleetmute
This is an excerpt from Held in Memory, Shared in Story, a collection of stories and teachings from Elders across the Middle Kuskokwim.
Wishing everyone a safe, respectful, and bountiful hunting season. May we continue to honor the animals, the land, and the teachings passed down to us.
