In honor of a true Pink season, happy hump day!

As August comes to a close and the end of the season nears, we like to take a deep breath, pour a finger (or two) of wh***ey, and share some laughs. And what better way then to take a look back on the ones that got away 🎣

Alaska fish only care about one thing: whether or not your fly looks like something worth munching on. With that said, when you’ve got the right fly swinging through the current, magic can happen, and when it does, it is remarkable. To help conjure up some of that Spey magic, we’ve put together a list (because everyone likes lists) of seven proven fly pattern concoctions that have survived countless wind-knotted leaders, icy mornings, and “one more cast” promises. Meet the Naknek’s best-dressed resident: the Dolly Varden. With vibrant colors and eye-catching spots, some might even call it the spotted rainbow of the river. Even in waters full of salmon, the dolly knows how to steal the show (and your fly). These adaptable nomads have big kahunas, or, as the youth say, main character energy as they stray from the confines of a one water fish. Freshwater? Yep. Lakes? Absolutely. Rivers? Of course. Saltwater and the ocean? Been there, done that. Keep an eye out for the spotted rainbow of the river, it’ll become your new obsession. Or downfall. Your choice.

Sockeye salmon are the most underrated player in Alaska’s lineup. Somehow, they’ve been labeled “just a salmon”. As if fierce fighters that will happily test your patience, your drag, and your upper body strength in one burst of chaos, means nothing. And after all that, they quietly become one of the best meals you’ll have all year.
Underrated? Yes.
Cooperative? No.
Worth it? Totally.

If you listen closely, you can almost hear it: The first reel screaming, the guide saying, “that’s a good one” and your buddy pretending he’s not jealous. Mark your calendars, it’s coming soon.
