MAJORITY OWNER OF THE AFL STEPPING DOWN

The majority owner of the AFL Abe Hernandez is stepping down and will be putting the league up for sale next week.

“I am confident that this is what’s best for my family and myself at this time. I’ve never been satisfied with anything less than 100% commitment in anything that I do and ultimately I can no longer give that effort.

I want to thank the AFL staff and our amazing coaches for understanding and generously supporting my decision. To the AFL players, fans, and sponsors thank you for your support throughout the years without you this league would not be possible” stated Hernandez

The AFL was formed in 2008 and in 2019 had 5 teams representing Anchorage, Eagle River and the Valley. During this period the AFL has assisted in developing players in moving to the next level of the sport. The 2020 season was cancelled due to the Covid Pandemic.

“The goal is to have a new majority owner in place by May 1st” stated Hernandez

THE AFL CANCELS 2020 SEASON

The Alaska Football League announced early Monday morning that it will be cancelling the 2020 season due to issues surrounding the COVID-19 public health pandemic. “This is a decision we take very seriously, and it comes as a result of extended, thoughtful discussion among our ownership group," said AFL Majority Owner Abe Hernandez.

The AFL was supposed to have five teams participating in the league this year: The Anchorage Cowboys, Frontier 49ers, Arctic Seahawks, Eagle River Broncos, and Valley Steelers.

“With teams spanning multiple communities, a plethora of ever-changing protocols/guidelines and constantly shrinking time lines, we made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 season”, added Hernandez

Among the many issues also facing the AFL in determining the feasibility of holding the 2020 season were the difficulties in complying with the physical distancing protocols for sports groups set by the Municipality of Anchorage for the Anchorage Football Stadium, the main home stadium of the AFL.

“The amount of time needed for our players to safely get into playing form after not being able to train for a period of time, and the amount of time needed to allow our teams to secure sponsors, order uniforms and complete other football related operations was going to be difficult to overcome”. said Hernandez

"The AFL remains committed to the safety and health of our players, staff members, fans, and community partners," stated AFL Commissioner Bob Lee. “We will be taking a proactive approach and focusing our efforts and our resources toward preparing for an exciting 2021 season” added Lee

The decision to cancel comes a little less than two months before what would have been the league’s 13th season. The AFL opener was scheduled for July 30th.
