WATER RESCUE & SAFETY CAUTION - This was a busy weekend for AAFD on the Huron River. On Saturday, June 21, 2025 at 5:05 PM, firefighters were dispatched to the river in the area of Argo Park for two reported kayakers in distress. There ended up being four kayakers who were assisted by others to the shore. Due to conflicting information, AAFD checked the river and discovered a fifth person who had fallen overboard was hanging onto a kayak by Bandemer Park. Fortunately, this person was wearing a personal floatation device. AAFD brought this person into our rescue boat and assisted them to shore. We received no 911 calls on this fifth person. It was fortuitous that AAFD was checking the river. We have experienced multiple concurrent rescues previously; when river conditions are rough for one, it is often rough for others.

On Sunday, June 22, 2025 at 3:15 PM, AAFD responded to Gallup Park for a person who was injured jumping into the river from the Gallup Bridge. Fortunately, the person suffered non-life threatening injuries.

NEVER jump off any of the bridges over the Huron River. People have DIED doing this exact thing on this stretch of the Huron River. The depth of the river is constantly changing and the river is full of debris.

We cannot stress enough the strength and speed of the Huron River's current. PLEASE WEAR A PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE if on the Huron River. The Huron River is NOT a controlled "lazy river" like you would find at an amusement park.

DN Ice Yacht Specifications - DN ICEBOAT WORLD 01/22/2022

The Barton Boat Club iceboats are DN models. The International DN is a class of iceboat. The name stands for Detroit News, where the first iceboat of this type was designed and built in the winter of 1936–1937. Archie Arrol was a master craftsman working in the Detroit News hobby shop, and together with iceboaters Joe Lodge and Norman Jarrait designed a racing boat they called the "Blue Streak 60", later to become known as the "DN 60". In 1937 a group of 50 laymen worked with Archie in the hobby shop to produce the first fleet of the new iceboats. These first boats broke during the initial season, and after Jarrait and Lodge modified the design to increase the strength, the group got back together to build a second set of iceboats in 1938. This design, featuring a narrow, single-person cockpit, three steel blades in tricycle style arrangement and a steeply raked mast, remains to this day the most popular iceboat design in use.

Starting today, Governor Whitmer is allowing small gatherings of 10 people or less, as long as participants practice social distancing. Please remember while you can't eliminate risk when leaving your home, there are ways to stay saf𝙚𝙧 if you do go out: stay outside, keep your distance, don't share your snacks, keep your hands clean, wear a mask if possible, and stay home if you're under the weather.

The updated executive order also allows retail businesses and auto dealerships to reopen by appointment statewide on Tuesday, May 26, if proper workplace safety measures are put in place. Nonessential medical, dental, and veterinary procedures can resume on Friday, May 29.
