June 29, 1989. Training with Yamaguchi-Sensei at his home dojo in Kaminoge.

Our Thursday training sessions were almost always one on one, they ran about three hours. Mrs. Yamaguchi would serve tea or coffee, we’d gear up, and Sensei would demonstrate, teach, and guide my progress. After practice we often had a b**r and snacks, sometimes lunch.

I knew I was getting a level of training I hadn’t experienced before that; I did not know at the time that this was a crucible of manhood. That four years utterly changed me as a human being in ways I am still discovering to this day.
