There’s more than one way to profile a hockey skate — and the machines used to do it are very different.

A lot of players hear the word profiling and assume every pro shop is essentially doing the same thing.

They’re not.

At The Sharpening Dude, we currently use three different profiling systems because each gives us a different capability.

ProSharp AS 2001
This is one of the most recognizable profiling systems in hockey. It excels at applying established profile templates accurately and repeatedly. If we want to reproduce a specific profile consistently from one set of steel to another, this is an extremely useful tool.

CagOne NHL Profiler
A completely different system with a different approach to controlling the geometry of the blade. It gives us another way to produce precise, repeatable profiles and expands what we’re able to offer depending on the skater and what we’re trying to accomplish.

Blackstone Stealth with the Shaper System
This is where things get really interesting.

The Shaper System is much more hands-on and customizable. Rather than simply selecting an existing profile, an experienced technician can manipulate the profile itself — including radius, pitch, transitions, blade contact and overall feel.

This is where profiling starts becoming an art instead of simply applying a template.

There are other systems out there as well.

The Elite Profiler 3 (EP3) and related Elite machines are seen much more frequently in Canada and include profiling, sharpening and combination configurations.

Then there is Skate Scribe, which approaches the entire process differently by using a CNC milling system. These machines aren’t normally purchased by individual shops. They’re leased, extremely expensive, and there are only a limited number operating around the world.

The point of this post isn’t to say that one machine is automatically better than another.

The machine is a tool.

What matters is understanding what that tool can do, understanding the geometry of the steel, and most importantly understanding what the skater actually needs.

Take a look through the photos. We included a quick explanation of each system.

For the hockey people out there: do you know what machine your skates are being profiled on?

Your kid didn’t suddenly forget how to skate.

But the player stepping on the ice this September may be a very different player than the one who finished last season.

That matters more than people think.

Youth hockey players can change dramatically in a year. They grow. They get stronger. Their balance changes. Their stride changes. Their skating mechanics change. Sometimes they move into a different boot, holder size, or steel.

And when the player changes, the setup underneath them may need to change too.

A profile that felt perfect last season may still be perfect this season.

But it also might not be.

That’s why we don’t believe profiling should be treated like a one-time decision.

Profiling isn’t magic, and there isn’t one radius or one setup that suddenly makes everyone faster. The purpose is to match the blade to the player standing in front of us right now.

Boot.
Holder.
Steel.
Hollow.
Profile.

It all works together.

So when a player says, “My skates just don’t feel right anymore,” don’t automatically dismiss it.

Something may actually have changed.

At The Sharpening Dude, we work with Blackstone Shaper System, the ProSharp AS2001, and the CAG ONE NHL Profiler because we want options. Different players need different solutions, and we’d rather evaluate the player than force everyone into the same answer.

Profile the player you are now — not the player you were last season.

I’m curious about this one:

Parents and players: Have you ever had a skate setup that felt amazing one season and completely different the next?

Just another completely normal upgrade at The Sharpening Dude…

We added a CAG One NHL Profiler to the shop.

No big deal.

Except this means we now have:

• CAG One NHL Profiler
• ProSharp AS-2001
• Blackstone Shaper System

Three different profiling systems under one roof.

Why does that matter?

Because there isn’t one “best” skate profile for everybody. Different players want different combinations of acceleration, speed, agility, stability, and ice contact.

Having multiple profiling systems gives us more options to build your steel around how you actually skate instead of trying to make every player fit into the same setup.

The CAG One is officially in service and we’re already excited about what we can do with it.

If you’ve been curious about profiling, or you have no idea what profile is currently on your skates, drop a comment or send us a message.

I found a rate sheet in my email from December 2022 and compared it to what those same rinks publish today.

Cabin John: $375 then. $390 now. Wheaton: same.

That's up 4 percent. Prices on everything else went up 12.5 percent over the same stretch. Which means county ice around here is cheaper today, in real terms, than it was in 2022.

I had to read that twice.

I went into this expecting to find the rinks were gouging hockey families. They're not. The county sheets have been holding the line at their own expense, and what's actually coming for them is worse: the DMV has added one net sheet of ice since 2020, and there's an EPA refrigerant rule that names ice rinks specifically and got no relief in the revision that helped supermarkets and cold storage.

So if it isn't the rinks, what is actually driving the cost of this sport? That's what I spent a few weeks figuring out, and every number in it is sourced to county fee schedules, published rate sheets and federal filings.

If you're a hockey parent around here, I'd genuinely like to know what your club is charging this year. I think the range is wider than any of us realize.

Your local shop told you to buy a new set. We just replaced the buckle.

Goalie gear takes a beating in places nobody thinks about until something snaps mid-game. Straps, buckles, pads, palms — most of it is repairable if someone’s willing to sit down and hand-stitch it.

We are.

Hand stitching and hardware repair on goalie gear, gloves, pants, and bags. Bring it by the shop in Annandale — if it can be saved, we’ll tell you straight. If it can’t, we’ll tell you that too.

Big addition to the shop: we now do equipment repair and alterations in-house.

We’ve added a professional leather patching machine — that means glove repairs (cuts, tears, palms, fingers), strap and buckle replacement, custom patching on high-wear areas, and fit alterations. No more shipping gear off or replacing gloves that just need a fix.

If your player’s gear is beat up heading into the season, bring it by. Appointments recommended — book at sharpeningdude.com or call 301-660-7321.

Every hockey parent in the DMV has had this moment: you're standing at the glass watching practice thinking, "...am I doing this right? Is my kid behind? Should we be doing more?"

I'm the Sharpening Dude — I sharpen skates out of a shed in Annandale — and I get cornered with these exact questions every weekend. So I finally wrote it all down. Free, no login, nothing to buy.

It's straight-talk youth hockey development, broken down by age, 6U all the way to 18U: what to actually work on, how much ice is enough, when to worry and when to relax. Plus separate guides for goalie parents, girls' hockey, brand-new families, and how players really move up the levels.

No club is named. Nothing's for sale on these pages. Just honest answers from someone who's been around DMV rinks a long time.

Find your kid's age and start there: sharpeningdude.com/pages/player-development-hub
If it helps, pass it to a parent who needs it.
