🐦 The First Ever Birding Festival is coming to Calhoun County on October 10! As we count down to the festival, we’re introducing you to some of the feathered residents you might spot around Calhoun County.

🐦 This week’s featured bird: The Carolina Chickadee!

👀 Small bird, BIG personality! Carolina Chickadees are tiny, curious songbirds with distinctive black caps and bibs, white cheeks and gray backs. They’re common throughout Alabama and can often be spotted hopping through trees and shrubs searching for insects and seeds.

🎶 Here’s a fun fact: Carolina Chickadees can actually learn to imitate the songs of Black-capped Chickadees! Where the two species overlap, Carolina Chickadees may pick up parts of their neighbors’ songs, creating mixed-up calls that can make identifying them a real challenge for even experienced birdwatchers.

🗣️ Their name even comes from their call! Listen closely and you may hear the familiar “chick-a-dee-dee-dee.” Chickadees also use their calls to communicate about danger, and the number of “dees” can change depending on the level of threat.

🌳 Want to find one? Look for Carolina Chickadees moving quickly through wooded areas, parks, backyards and forest edges. They’re also frequent visitors to bird feeders, especially when sunflower seeds are on the menu!

🦅 This week’s featured bird: The Red-tailed Hawk!

👀 Look up! Red-tailed Hawks are powerful raptors with broad wings and impressive eyesight. They can spot a mouse from about 100 feet in the air, and small rodents make up much of their diet. In Alabama, Red-tailed Hawks can be found year-round.

🎬 Here’s a fun fact: You probably already know what a Red-tailed Hawk sounds like, even if you don't realize it! That dramatic, piercing hawk or eagle scream used in movies and television is very often the call of a Red-tailed Hawk. Hollywood apparently decided their scream was the perfect sound for just about every impressive bird of prey!

❤️ Mated pairs typically remain together until one dies.

🌳 Keep an eye on the sky, fence posts, trees and other high perches around open areas. With a wingspan that can reach more than four feet, these impressive birds can be hard to miss once you know what you're looking for!

🐦 This week’s featured bird: The Summer Tanager!

❤️💛 Same bird, completely different look! Adult male Summer Tanagers are brilliant red all over, while females are a beautiful yellow to yellow-green. Despite those bright colors, they can be surprisingly tricky to spot because they spend much of their time high in the tree canopy.

🐝 Here’s a fun fact: Summer Tanagers are bee and wasp specialists! They catch them in flight and have even developed a way of removing a bee’s stinger before eating it. You can also find them feeding on other insects and fruits such as blackberries and mulberries.

🌳 Keep an eye, and an ear, out around open woodlands and forest edges. Summer Tanagers breed throughout the southern U.S. before heading south for the winter.
