I am telling Lilly constantly that she needs to ride at home and school mostly in a snaffle with split reins or at least a longer barrel rein. Working on foundation pieces all the time especially the day to day riding.

I don't know if most of you know this, but most of the time when I was training this beautiful horse, I mainly did it in a snaffle. Only really putting the double bridle on every few weeks, or the week leading up to the show.

My feeling is I always want to be able to do everything in a snaffle to the highest level and not 'rely' on a double. For me, it's so important. Anyway, I'm going to try and share more bits of how I train and do things, which hopefully you'll enjoy. This is the very basics on these bits.

Loose ring snaffles

- the ring should always be able to move freely

- not more than 5mm space between the corners of the mouth and the bit ring on each side

Bits with fixed cheeks

- the side part should be close to both mouth corners

- must therefore be chosen one size smaller than loose ring snaffles

We use Sprenger Bits for all of our horses and find they have something for every horse x

I spend so much time teaching young kids that when I get to teach someone flying lead changes on a horse still learning flying lead changes I get a little giddy. I had fun with that yesterday. It's one thing to ride a pre programmed horse that already knows them but a bit different experience to learn the mechanics and timing to helping a horse learn them.

This is just a piece of how I teach, it's like problem solving on horseback. When something happens how do we respond to it, what is time timing to, how should it feel, why do we feel/ask for these things, what response should we get from the horse, the "deep stuff" I often say. Not just sitting up there as a passenger. I'll never say I have push button horses because they will make you work for your ride, once you get it right you'll find a totally different horse underneath you.

Years ago I decided to make shirts for my barn and on the back of each one it says "Teaching Confidence, Communication, and Trust!"
Three huge factors that play a big part on my program.

One of my all time favorite books is Centered Riding by Sally Swift where I learned so many amazing techniques for riding and teaching. Anyone that rides with me gets a building blocks lesson in one of their first two sessions, it usually ends up being lesson two.

The foundation to good riding lies in balance. I found myself this past week talking to several people about this. No matter what your discipline or sport, if you're not carrying yourself well your horse is affected. They won't be able to run their fastest, jump their highest, or even lope their slowest if you aren't balanced properly. Of course "balanced" changes some for each individual discipline but we all ride on the flat too so should come back to this for the basics.

How do you make bombproof kid safe horses?

You teach them ground manners and raise kids around them.

Macy found this brush in the car while i was feeding, later she disappeared and I found her in Elsa's pen brushing her mane. I have a feeling her and Lilly are going to be dangerous together one day. ❀❀❀

Interesting, maybe I need some teal buckets for horse shows.

https://www.facebook.com/154668457893186/posts/4660701780623142/

UPDATED: Quick Tip - Want your horse to drink more water? Try using a turquoise bucket. The Australian Journal of Veterinary Sciences recently published a study that horses prefer to drink out of teal buckets. They tested six bucket colors. Most to least picked were: turquoise, light blue, light green, green, yellow, and red. (We notice some of you think this is an April Fools joke... this one is actually true, unlike today's earlier post.)

We're anticipating babies again soon. Bubble gum was said to be due in April but we're almost past that.

Spring is here and we're shedding out horses, seems like they all need hooves trimmed at the same time, and we're prepping to put up a temporary sacrifice area. Anyone interested and willing to put in some volunteer time picking out pastures just send me a message and we can make arrangements.

"To help you understand what the horse feels when you sit crookedly in the saddle, load a wheelbarrow heavily to one side as in the center illustration. Now push the wheelbarrow, and feel how it pulls to the weighted side and how you are forced to lean in that direction to compensate. That’s how your horse feels when you sit unevenly in the saddle, as shown in the left image. When you sit evenly, the horse will be centered and balanced as shown in the illustration on the right." β€” Sharon Sweet

"The other problem is that a lot of people don’t understand the theoretical background to the concept of connection – they think a horse’s head should be down – they haven’t really absorbed that the horse should move from behind, over the back, over the neck."

I know we're a horse barn but these cute baby goats need some fame too.

Our newest doeling was born today around 1:30pm. She was quite a beast compared to.our last triplets. That is her on the right and the baby on the left will be a week old tomorrow. We have one more doe we're expecting to kid sometime mid March or later.

Currently we have 3 available bucklings and one doeling looking for a home if you know anyone looking.

Thinking about a saddle club type session Monday afternoon with kids off school. Who might be interested?

The arena is iffy so we're not riding in it until we get some good sunny days. 🀞 But we can do lots of horsey things.

We had a great time being part of this birthday girls day today! Hope your birthday was awesome Nikki!
It was an added bonus having a few baby goats to snuggle and we were super thankful yesterday's wind didn't stick around.

01/23/2021

Today was a tad windy for lessons. πŸ™ˆ
Hoping for a little less wind tomorrow for the birthday party anyway.

Enjoy this picture of Dixie #2 and her best buddy Milo. These 2 stick together quite closely. Horses and their individual personalities are super fun when you take the time to learn them.

I really liked this visual, I posted about my enjoyment for retraining broken horses on my page the other day and a lot of what I focus on is explained here.

I'm a big hand and elbow watcher. Contact is not possible with a stiff elbow and an unsteady hand. This is also hard to accomplish without a proper seat that is soft and capable of following the motion.

To all the parents who's kids were at camp last week and might curious about Smoky. He went to the vet last Wednesday. The diagnosis is a broken leg and will be splinted for 6 weeks. This kitten sure has caused quite a bit of chaos since showing up here and I hope from now on he decides to stay out of trouble.
For now he's living in the tack room to limit his movement, keeping him from spilling his litter box is fun but he's slowly getting around more the last few days. Its nice to see him sitting up.
