What does a first-class show weekend look like to a horse?

A perfect show weekend looks a lot different for a horse than it does for us.

Horses don’t care about the decorations, attendees, or how impressive the main ring looks. When they step off the trailer, they want:

✅ A cool, quiet space away from heavy foot traffic
✅ Good airflow so they aren't breathing in dust all day
✅ Easy access to clean water and hay
✅ Room to stretch out, drop their head, and actually reset

Between competing and processing all the noise on the grounds, horses take in a massive amount of stimulation over a show weekend. Giving them a quiet, comfortable stall lets them switch off between classes (and benefits their overall performance!).

Arrived at a new venue? Have a quick look around before you unload

Every showground has its own unique layout, so give yourself a few minutes to get your bearings before unpacking.

Where’s the stabling? Where can you fill water? Where are the warm up areas?

Then have a look inside the stall itself before your horse goes in. Check the door, panels and anything they could catch themselves on.

And if you travel to shows regularly, bringing your own temporary stabling gives you a bit more control over the setup your horse walks into each time.

FEI Stabling provides modular stall systems that can travel with you and be set up around the space available at the venue.

The horse show checklist that saves showrunners a lot of last-minute panic

There’s a lot – and we mean a lot – happening in the run-up to a show. But the funny thing is it’s usually the little things that get forgotten.

Before the first trailer rolls in on show day, check:

✅ Stall numbers match your entries
✅ Aisles have enough room for horses and equipment
✅ Water is easy to reach
✅ Feed and bedding have somewhere dry to go
✅ Emergency access stays clear
✅ Horses have shade and airflow
✅ Your team knows the layout inside out

If you're in the middle of planning an upcoming event and want to make sure your setup is ready to handle it all, we'd love to help. Drop us a message – or visit our website – and find out how we can help with our modular stabling solutions.

If you had to pick just ONE, what’s your non-negotiable when choosing stabling?

1️⃣ Horse comfort
2️⃣ Safety
3️⃣ Ventilation
4️⃣ Strength & durability

We know it’s almost impossible to pick just one – they all work together to keep a horse happy and healthy. But if you were forced to prioritize, which one comes first on your list?

We get a lot of questions about how well temporary stalls perform. Here are a few of the ones that come up most often (and their answers!):

Are temporary stables strong enough for everyday use?

Absolutely! A good modular setup is built to handle normal horse behavior – leaning, kicking, rubbing, and everything else they throw at it.

Can I change the layout later?

Yes, that’s actually one of the biggest perks. You can add, remove, or reconfigure stalls whenever your space or headcount changes.

Does temporary mean low quality?

Not at all. You still get solid divider panels, great airflow, and a clean overall setup that’s every bit as reliable as a permanent barn.

Got a question about temporary stabling we didn't cover? Send us a message directly, and we’ll get back to you ASAP with the info you need.

Nothing beats hearing from the people using our stalls

We love seeing FEI Stabling setups out in the world – and hearing how well they’ve worked for the horses and teams using them.

Recently, Ed Hollaway shared his experience working with our team, saying:

“FEI offered superb stables and very organized service. I cannot more highly recommend them.”

A huge thank you to Ed for his kind words!

Why flexibility matters when designing equine spaces

Hardly any horse property stays the same forever. Herd sizes shift, show rosters grow, and what worked for your farm two years ago might not today.

The trouble is when your stabling is locked in stone or concrete, adapting is expensive. Thankfully, opting for modular stabling makes switching up your layout simple. You can:

Adjust as you grow: Add stalls when entry numbers surge, or open up space when you need room for storage.
Customize for events: Set up wide aisles and isolation stalls for big multi-day events, then reconfigure the layout when it's back to daily use.
Use your land better: Set up stabling on flat pastures or gravel pads when you need the extra capacity, then reclaim the open ground once the season wraps up.

Building a stall setup that works for horses and handlers

A great stabling setup needs to do two jobs well: keep horses comfortable, and keep life easy for the people taking care of them. When a layout misses the mark on either side, show days lose their magic.

When you’re designing or choosing a stall setup, here’s some big things to keep in mind:

Smart layouts: Wide, open aisles mean two handlers can pass each other with horses or tack trunks without having to play chicken or squeeze against walls.
Easy access: Smooth-sliding stall doors that open fully make leading horses in and out a breeze.
Good sightlines: Solid lower walls keep horses from kicking through to their neighbors, while upper bars or open mesh let them see what’s going on so they don't feel trapped.
Seamless feed and water routine: Access points that let you top up water or drop hay without wrestling open a door every single time save serious hours over a long weekend.

FEI Stabling can help you get the layout right from the start, with practical solutions built around your horses and your team.

How the right materials impact stall quality and durability

When you put horses in temporary stabling, panel quality shows up pretty quickly.

Cheaper, thin setups tend to rattle when the wind blows or when a neighbor kicks the wall.
They absorb moisture, hold onto smells, and don't always take a kick well.

Choosing heavy-duty materials just makes for a much better barn:

A quieter barn: Solid, dense panels eliminate that loud metallic clatter that keeps horses on edge, so they can drop their heads and get some rest.
Fewer scrapes and snags: Smooth, splinter-free surfaces mean horses aren't injuring themselves when they rub against the walls.
Easier cleaning and longer life: Non-porous materials don't soak up water or dampness, which means they clean up fast and hold up through years of heavy show use.

Overall, better materials = less time spent fixing broken hardware, safer horses, and stabling you don't have to worry about once it's up.

Horse show planning tip #6: Get the plan on paper first

There’s a certain kind of panic that happens when the build crew arrives and someone says, “Wait… where are we putting that row?”

It’s much easier to sort those details out before the trucks arrive. Have the layout agreed and make sure everyone working on the setup is looking at the same plan.

Floorplans might not be the most thrilling part of putting on a horse show, but they will save you from delays and stressful situations later on.
