Growing the Future of Racquetball in India: Reflections from the Second Sub-Junior and Junior National Championship

By Alok Mehta, President, Indian Racquetball Association

Dear colleagues at the International Racquetball Federation,

On behalf of the Indian Racquetball Association (IRA), I am pleased to share the successful completion of our Second Sub-Junior and Junior National Racquetball Championship 2025-26, held from June 14–15 in Sirsa, Haryana.

This event marked another important milestone in our journey to build a vibrant racquetball community in India. With 80 young athletes from 12 states competing across Singles, Doubles, and Mixed events in both Under-16 (Sub-Junior) and Under-19 (Junior) categories, the championship showcased the growing enthusiasm and talent among India’s youth. We are proud to report that Maharashtra State emerged as the top performer, securing the overall championship trophy with an outstanding medal tally.

As our second national-level youth event, this championship reinforced our belief that grassroots racquetball in India is gaining strong momentum. We are especially encouraged by the increased regional participation, improved competitive standards, and the spirit of sportsmanship displayed throughout the tournament.

We would like to extend our deep gratitude to the International Racquetball Federation (IRF) for your continued encouragement and support. Your guidance has been invaluable in helping us establish a structured framework for player development, tournament standards, and coaching initiatives.

Looking ahead, the Indian Racquetball Association is committed to expanding the sport through:
State-level coaching programs and school outreach
Infrastructure partnerships with clubs and academies
More frequent junior and senior tournaments across the country
Preparing India’s top youth for international competitions

We are excited about the future and look forward to continuing our close partnership with the IRF to promote racquetball in India and beyond.

With appreciation and in sport,
Alok Mehta
President
Indian Racquetball Association

We’re officially embarking on an exciting new chapter for Racquetball in India. Racquetball India is thrilled to announce its new president, Mr. Nand Singh, who has shown incredible dedication to the sport. He took the initiative to successfully build racquetball courts at The Mount School, Sirsa (Haryana), and his contributions have been pivotal to the growth of the organization.

This project has been led by Alok Mehta , alongside India’s new team coach, Thomas Carter. They both flew to India to kick off coaching camps and a tournament. On the first day, 25 coaches from 14 states participated in the workshop. Tomorrow, the focus will shift to the grassroots program, with over 100 students and 40 adults expected to take part.

Also, don’t miss the Indian National Racquetball Championship 2025, taking place from March 25–27 at The Mount School, Sirsa (Haryana).

Racquetball isn’t just a sport; it’s a lifelong passion that brings people together, keeps you sharp, and fuels the spirit of competition. On World Racquetball Day, we have an opportunity to breathe new life into this incredible game.

Whether you’re introducing a friend to the court for the first time or inviting a player back after years away, today is about building community and sharing the joy of the game. Consider donating to programs that build new courts, support youth leagues, or ensure access for all. Every action counts.

Step onto the court today and make your mark. Help someone discover—or rediscover—the thrill of the game. Together, we can ensure that racquetball remains a vibrant and growing sport for generations to come.

Team India delivered a decent performance at the World Championships, successfully advancing its overall rankings. Vineet Singh’s victory over Ecuador was crucial in this journey. Similarly, the doubles team of Alok Mehta and Tejas Veer’s win over Colombia contributed to the better seeding. Praveen Gorthy played his part by keeping his competition in check and providing strong support for the team. Team India was placed 10th out of 16, steadily progressing over the years. There were many nail biting tie breaker games that the team played. This competitive spirit is actually commendable as the average age of the team was almost twice or more than its competitors.

Congratulations to Tejas for securing a silver medal in the Friendship Cup division. We are proud of the team and the way they represented their country!

Many thanks to the International Racquetball Federation (IRF) for organizing a great event. Our gratitude also goes to USA Racquetball for hosting the event, and to all the volunteers and sponsors. Congratulations to all the winners. The results are on the IRF website as well as on R2sports (https://www.r2sports.com/website/event-results.asp?TID=42436)

A special thanks to Gearbox Racquetball for donating racquets, balls, and eye guards for players in India, helping us grow the sport in our country.
