Established in 1967, Yorktown Crew has a proud tradition, consistently ranking as one of the top public high school programs in the metropolitan Washington, DC area.

Yorktown High School Crew is seeking a Program Director and Head Coach for the 2026-2027 season to foster a competitive, safe, and positive environment for approximately 100 men and women student-athletes while driving the program’s long-term vision.

Senior rower Robbie McLaughlin’s favorite memories include the unforgettable spring break training trips and winning state championships with his teammates.

Robbie first started rowing in 9th grade and has rowed every starboard seat in 8s and 4s.
Robbie’s YHS Crew highlights include:

2023 Freshman M8+ VASRA State Championship (1st)
2024 3V M8+ VASRA State Championship (1st)
2025 2V M8+ VASRA State Championship (3rd) & Junior M8+ Stotesbury Cup (6th)

This fall, Robbie is heading to Blacksburg to study Computer Science at Virginia Tech, where he plans to keep the momentum going with the Hokie club rowing team!

Senior Spotlight: Senior rower Declan Leighton will always remember winning the 2025 VASRA State Championship, swimming at spring training in Oak Ridge, and sunrises over the Potomac.

Declan first picked up an oar at a learn-to-row camp on the Anacostia River the summer before 8th grade in 2022, and has gone on to scull and sweep in all types of boats and in all the seats with Yorktown Crew, TBC Racing, One Arlington Rowing, and Potomac Boat Club. Some crew highlights include 3rd M8+ SRAA Scholastic National Championship 2026; 4th M8+ Stotesbury Cup 2026; 1st M8+ VASRA State Championship 2025 and 2026; 1st M4x- Head of the Schuylkill Regatta 2025; 4th U17 M8+ Head of the Charles 2023; 1st Freshman M8+ VASRA State Championship 2023; and 2nd Novice M8+ VASRA State Championship 2022.

Declan was selected for the Class of 2026 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll and named the 2026 Crew Sportsman of the Year by the Better Sports Club of Arlington.

This fall, Declan looks forward to rowing on the heavyweight crew team at MIT and studying aerospace and nuclear engineering.

Congratulations to our amazing Varsity and Novice boats that represented Yorktown HS Crew at the national level this weekend at the SRAA Scholastic National Championship Regatta in Oak Ridge, TN! Girls 1V8+ placed 6th in Petite Final, Boys 2V8+ placed 5th in Final, Girls 2V8+ placed 4th in Heat, Boys Freshmen 8+ placed 6th in Heat, and Girls Freshmen 8+ placed 5th in Heat. All boats raced fast and finished strong! The future is bright for Yorktown HS Crew! It’s a beautiful day to be a Patriot!🚣‍♀️💪🔥🩵🔥💪🚣‍♂️

Senior Spotlight: For Varsity Boys Captain Thomas Totten, the annual spring break training trips and winning the 2023, 2025, and 2026 VASRA State Championships rank among his favorite rowing memories.

Thomas began rowing in 8th grade, and his remarkable achievements include: 2nd place M-N-8+ (VSRC ’22), 1st place M-Fr-8+ ( VSRC ’23), 6th place M-Fr-8+ (Stotesbury ‘23), 5th place M-Fr-8+ (SRAA ‘23), 2nd place u17 8+ (OAR, Head of the H***h ‘23), 4th place M-1V-8+ (VSRC ‘24), 11th place youth 1V 8+ (SRAA ‘24), 1st place u17 4+ (OAR, Head of the Potomac ‘24), 1st place u17 4+ (OAR, Occoquan Chase ‘24), 4th place u17 4+ (OAR, Head of the Charles ‘24), 1st place u17 4+ (OAR, Head of the H***h ‘24), 1st place M-1V-8+ (VSRC ‘25), 1st place M-1V-8+ (Ryz Obuchowicz ‘26), 3rd place M-1V-8+ (St. Andrew’s ’26), 1st place M-1V-8+ (VSRC ‘26), and 4th place M-1V-8+ (Stotesbury ‘26). Thomas was also recognized as a member of the Washington Post 2025 Spring All-Met: Boys Rowing First Team.

Thomas will continue his rowing career at the United States Naval Academy after being recruited to their Men’s Heavyweight team. At the Academy, he will pursue a career in serving as an officer in the United States Navy or Marine Corps.

Senior Spotlight: YHS Crew Senior Captain Ava Woodring will always remember receiving a gold medal in a single and attending the SRAA Nationals alongside the Varsity squad as an alternate her Freshman year.

Ava started rowing her Freshman year, has rowed all seats and includes among her outstanding accomplishments: 1st place at Robert E. Day Jr. Sprints (Women’s Novice Single), 2nd place at Charlie Butt Regatta 2023-2025 (Women’s 1V8+), 2nd place at St. Andrew’s Invitational 2026 (Women’s 1V8+), 4th place at Head of the Occoquan 2025 (Women’s 1V8+), 2nd place at VA States 2026 (Women’s 1V8+), Repeating Semi-Finalists at Stotesbury Cup Regatta, VA All-State Honorable Mention 2026, and Recipient of the Henry Burneson Scholarship Award.

Ava plans to continue her rowing career at the Division 1 Level at the University at Albany while pursing a nursing degree.
