I’ve been going down huge rabbit holes. Large data set analysis and seeing how the 2026 season played out from the mound.

The Tampa Bay Rays have EMBRACED the changeup fully!

Something that is a lot easier said than done and includes a lot of variables such as:

🛸 Having guys who can throw it.
🛸 How GOOD is their CH?
🛸 Can they throw it effectively in any count?
🛸 How does it shape off their fastball?
🛸 Differentials with other pitchers who throw it from the same slot and/or velo.

They’ve got a staff full of filthy changeups.

But other teams had good ones and didn’t leverage them as much.

Seeing how the Rays are having g a historical year and heading to the ALCS, it’s only going to open the jar for throwing MORE and EFFECTIVE changeups.

All I can say…it’s about time. 🥹

Yamamoto is ELITE. Whether it’s the regular season or postseason, he’s one of the most detail oriented guys out there.

And it shows.

But his stuff is soooo electric + providing different looks and shapes of each when needed.

I put together some cool data visuals to show you just how dominant he was last night.

When his number is called in big games, he delivers.

Man, he’s so much fun to watch.

A beautiful FB/CH combo for the Rays’ closer 🙌

Bryan Baker throws his changeup at a beautiful 43.8% of the time mark.

Music to my ears. A 96+ mph fastball paired with a 85 mph changeup is the perfect deception and disruption needed to make a AB uncomfortable!

The numbers:

➡️ 43.8% usage
➡️ 1844 spin rate
➡️ 8.7” IVB
➡️ 14.9” HB
➡️ 1:15 spin direction observed at 2:15 (SSW)

🛸 .177 BAA
🛸 32.4% whiff

I’ve talked about the changeup for years and the top development factor will always be arm speed. You can have all the movement but if your arm speed doesn’t align with the FB, you’re tipping.

Baker does that so well. Throws it hard. Let’s the grip work. Takes off 10 mph.

We can see why he was an all-star and finished with 41 saves.

The probable AL Cy Young winner showed why he’s so tough to hit!

You can see in those heat maps what was working last night.

➡️ Elevated fastball

➡️ Curve down

A pretty cliche combo but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

He was also throwing GAS last night so with his 6’6” frame that bull was jumping at guys averaging 17” of IVB.

Look at it this way, any fastball above 17” of vert typically have that rising effect to hitters so it adds extra life.

Now add in his extension in the 80th percentile, roughly 6’8”, and triple digits.

Then he would break off that curveball right off the same plan as the fastball with -11” of vert…so, a 28” difference.

And that’s why he had a sub 2.00 ERA and the CY favorite.

Electric.
