Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers mourns the horrific death of Eliza “Liza” Fletcher. We send our deepest condolences to her family, friends, students, co-workers and community. Liza, a wife, a mother, a teacher and a runner was abducted while on a run in Memphis, TN then tragically murdered.
RAW condemns all violence, victim-blaming, and any narrative that suggests women should only run outdoors at certain times or run in certain clothes or run in certain areas or any other restrictions on when, where, how and why women choose to run outside. Running is for everyone and no one should be harmed or harassed (or even fear these things happening) when running.
We urge you to use your sadness or anger or disgust or fear to advocate against violent crimes directed at women - THAT is the behavior that needs to change.
On Friday, runners in Memphis and across the country will be running to finish Liza’s run. May she rest in eternal peace.

Spotlight: Since 1975, only twenty out of the 14 million people who have completed a marathon were US-born, African-American women, who broke three hours with their finish times. A new documentary, "Breaking Three Hours: Trailblazing African-American Women Marathoners," tells the story of nine of these amazing women. Produced by the National Black Marathoners’ Association (NBMA) and Kayla Key Production Studios, the film will feature biographical information about and interviews with: Marilyn Bevans, Ella Willis-Glaze, Michele Bush-Cuke, Michele Tiff-Hill, Alisa Harvey, Samia Akbar, Shawanna White, Ingrid Walters, and Sika Henry. Spotlight: Ted Metellus , who, in 2021, became the first Black race director of not only the TCS New York City Marathon, but the first Black race director of any World Major Marathon. Metellus, 47, was born and raised in the Bronx, so the New York City marathon is very much his hometown race. As a high school student at All Hallows High, Metellus ran cross country, but has been quick to credit the team experience with helping to form his values and philosophies as a race organizer. Metellus has worked in various capacities for the New York Road Runners, the organization that hosts the New York City Marathon, since 2001, slowly adding to his responsibilities. In that time, he has also worked on nearly every aspect of race organizing, from domestic locations such as D.C. and Seattle to countries such as Aruba and Ireland.

Following his promotion to TCS New York City Marathon, Mettelus told ESPN.com "At the end of the day, what I would like is not to be the first and last. Who else am I opening up the doors for? When I look at the industry right now, who's going to be the next person and how do I lay the groundwork for them?"
