When your opponent shuts down your leg drag, their defense can create an opening for a rolling kneebar.

Coach Martin demonstrates the sequence with his opponent playing bottom open guard with his feet on Martin’s hips. He clears the legs to one side and enters the leg drag, but when his opponent brings his knee back inside to stop the pass, Martin immediately transitions to the kneebar.

Watch how he controls the heel, creates space, steps through, and rolls over his shoulder. He also shows how to control the opponent’s other leg during the roll so it can’t interfere with the kneebar finish.

How To Counter a Berimbolo By Taking Your Opponent's Back

When your opponent starts setting up a berimbolo, recognizing what’s coming early can give you the opportunity to turn their attack against them.

Coach Martin of Cloud Nine MMA demonstrates how to shut down a seated berimbolo attempt before your opponent can complete the rotation and expose your back. By blocking the hips, adjusting your knee position, establishing an instep hook, controlling the foot and hip, and creating the right angle, you can stop the attack and transition directly into your own back take.

The goal isn’t just to defend the berimbolo. It’s to turn defense into offense and put yourself in position to attack.

How To Hit a Calf Slicer After a Failed Double Leg and Scramble.

What happens when your double-leg takedown fails and your opponent sprawls and a scramble ensues? Coach Viet Ta of Cloud Nine MMA shows how to turn the scramble into a calf slicer submission.

Starting from the failed double leg, Coach Viet uses wrist control and a sit-out as his opponent circles toward his back. From there, he rolls forward and uses the scramble to trap the leg, establish a figure-four and isolate the hips before attacking the calf slicer. He also explains an important finishing detail: controlling the toes instead of the shin to make it harder for your opponent to extend the leg and escape.

A failed takedown doesn’t always mean the attack is over. Sometimes the scramble creates your next opportunity.

Want to create an opening with your kickboxing combination instead of just throwing punches and kicks?

Coach Viet Ta demonstrates a simple Dutch-style kickboxing combination that uses arm control to clear the way for the next strike. Start with a jab, throw the cross, and use that movement to pull your opponent’s rear arm down. That creates an opening for the lead hook. Then pivot on the ball of your lead foot and finish with a low kick.

Jab → Cross + Arm Pull → Lead Hook → Low Kick

It’s a simple combination that brings punches, hand fighting, footwork, and a low kick together in one sequence.

A tough Jiu Jitsu training session can be intense. You compete, get put in bad positions, push yourself, and challenge your training partners. But when the rounds are over, the respect is always there.

At the end of class, everyone comes together to thank the coaches and the people they trained with. Your training partners are the ones who help you learn, improve, and become better every time you step on the mats. No matter how hard you battled during training, you finish together with a handshake and mutual respect. That’s one of the best traditions in Jiu Jitsu.

How To Get The Kimura Grip From Top Half Guard

What do you do if you are in top half guard and your opponent gets the underhook on you? In this video, Coach Martin Doan, shows how you can defend against the bottom underhook by getting a kimura grip on your opponent. This technique involves flattening out your opponent, grabbing their far side wrist, getting the kimura grip, moving their other arm above their head, switching your hips, stepping over their head with your far leg, and then raising their wrist up with the kimura grip to secure the submission.
