Don’t Block that Block 03/31/2016

Things that make you go hmm.....

Don’t Block that Block Sometimes people tell me there is no blocking in their martial styles and I feel a little sad for them. No doubt they feel that not blocking is a more evolved level of martial prowess.

Special thanks to my students for all the hard work this year. The gift of calligraphy is already in my home in a place of honor. Thanks guys! I love you all.

We did a 7 Star workshop at Sifu Rik Kellerman's school a few year's back. Here's his review of the event taken from kung fu online: the workshop was excellent, as could be expected from Sifu Thomas. He was clear, concise, and explained each move in detail, playing hands-on with everyone. He brought in Hing-Dai and senior students who were very helpful in aiding the attendees in learning the finer points of the Seven Star Praying Mantis. I had learned a version of this set many years ago, and was surprised to see the level and intricacies Sifu Thomas brought out in the workshop-the moves within the moves, the sublties of power generation, angles, strategies, and application out the w***o. Sifu Thomas showed an understanding of Gung-Fu that transended mere technique. "The proof is in the hands." Sifu Thomas is living proof. There are not many like him around, and when the second workshop is announced, you should make an effort, no matter what style you study, to attend.
There are very few people of such high understanding and skill, that are so free with sharing their knowledge.

This is a friendship banner, that was given to Sifu Chiu Luen by his younger Gung fu brother Sifu Lee Kam Wing. This banner used to hang in the Mott Street school and was given to my Sifu when he opened his school on Broome Street after Sifu Chiu's retirement. The banner was given to me after I started teaching in 1991.
This is one of the only remaining banners from Sifu Chiu's school, the others that inherited by my Sifu were destroyed in an apartment fire. I post these photos because these are pieces of our lineage history.
