Phoenix Bikes

Thanks to our partnership with the Immigrant & Refugee Outreach Center, two kids from Afghan families will have their very own bikes to explore their new community and experience the joy of riding with.

These bikes were fixed up as a labor of love by our Earn-a-Bike students, volunteers and staff. We’re so grateful for the opportunity to help out our new community members!
Our teachers became the students in the shop today📝

We have plans in the works for restarting our Advanced Mechanics program for Earn-a-Bike graduates who want to become true bike mechanic pros!💯

Noe and Liam held class for our bike club instructors to show them the ropes as we prepare to relaunch the program this spring.🚲🔧
Please join us in giving a warm welcome to our newest team member, Robbie Deaton!🎊

Robbie joined us this week as our new program coordinator, and is already getting his hands dirty in the shop and helping with students. Over the next few months, he’ll be getting an extra special extended training period before taking over the role from Liam when he leaves for college in June.

Robbie graduated from NC State University with a B.S. in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management, and has extensive experience working with youth and teaching backpacking, rock climbing, and paddling sports. Combine that with his passion for bikes, and we knew that we had found ourselves a stand-out candidate for the job.

Welcome to Phoenix, Robbie!👏🎉
Rain, rain, go away!🌧

Due to the rainy weather we're getting this Friday and the cold and windy temperatures on Saturday, the mountain bike ride for this Saturday, February 5 is cancelled.

If you had your heart set on hitting the trails with us, have no fear! We have plans to reschedule, so keep an eye out for announcements about our next mountain bike ride.🚵‍♀️
📸Snapshots from the shop📸

One of our favorite volunteers and bike club instructors, Bob, shows a student how to check whether a wheel is true. We’re true-ly grateful for the help of our talented instructors!🚲⚙️
We love to see a packed Earn-a-Bike orientation!👀🚲

Orientations happen every Wednesday from 5-6, and are welcome to all teens 12-17 years old who fill out a registration form at 📝 After you go to orientation, you can show up any time the shop is open to start your Earn-a-Bike adventure!🔧🚲

Congratulations to the graduates of our Washington-Liberty class!🎓 With the last few youth wrapping up the final touches on their bikes, we’re pumped to see our students rolling out the door on their new rides.

Our Dorothy Hamm and Gunston students will be following their lead in the upcoming weeks, so stay tuned for more celebration-worthy moments!

Thanks to Arlington Trails for partnering with us to get youth out on the trails!🚵‍♀️

Another fun Arlington Trails/ Phoenix Bikes MTB ride. On this chilly January day, we had our biggest group to date. It’s been almost a year since we started driving a group to the trails. Word is getting out in Arlington that MTB is another fun way to get out on our bikes.

Leslie graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a masters in public management, and has experience spanning from teaching 5th grade science to managing nonprofit programs. After becoming a volunteer with us last May, she was pumped to continue her six years of experience in the mentoring sphere by taking on her new role.

We couldn't be more thrilled to have Leslie join us as we roll into 2023!

Help us congratulate the first Earn-a-Bike graduate from our fall semester after school bike clubs!🎊🚲

We’re looking forward to seeing more youth take home their very own bikes as Washington-Liberty, Dorothy Hamm and Gunston students fill up our shop in January.

When Suhieb started our Earn-a-Bike program last spring, he thought this moment—the day he earned his very own bike—was the finish line for his time at Phoenix. But after learning about our paid shop internship and Team Phoenix, he jumped at the chance to experience the professional growth, lifelong memories, and exciting new challenges that these programs offered.

In 2023, we want to continue innovating and expanding our programs to give more local youth the opportunity to thrive. Don't miss your chance to make an impact—there's just over 24 hours left to donate to our year-end campaign at

We decided to take advantage of students being off on winter break to do a test-run of our Advanced Mechanics class. In just a few days Jas and Bob have expertly led students through complex mechanical concepts like repairing bent frames and dropouts, radial truing and dishing wheels, and more!

After seeing the success of the pilot program, we're pumped to relaunch the official Advanced Mechanics program this spring to help our students take their mechanics skills to the next level!🔧⚙️

Waffling🧇 over what to do with your final days of winter break? Join us this weekend for a Saturday youth ride over to the Waffle Shop in Del Ray! Meet us at the shop at 10am for a fun 7-mile round-trip ride, and a yummy breakfast at this well-loved local institution.

We're keeping an eye on the weather forecast, and will post an announcement on our story on Friday afternoon if we have to cancel the ride.

Happy holidays from Phoenix Bikes! This morning our team gathered to celebrate an amazing year and the incredible people who made it happen with a super-yummy breakfast at Cafe Sazon.

Just as a reminder, we will be closed for Christmas Eve tomorrow (12/24) to let our wonderful team spend time with their families. Outside of Christmas Eve our hours are normal, so if you’re looking for last-minute gifts stop by our shop and pick out a bike for you or your loved ones this holiday season!🚲

Happy New Bike Day, Jackson!🎊

Jackson spent part of his winter break in our shop fixing up his Earn-a-Bike—and you can too! Phoenix youth are welcome to take advantage of their time off by wrenching on bikes with us this holiday season.🔧🚲

One of Suhieb's favorite parts about being an intern was that he learned something new each and every day he came into the shop. Suhieb recalls that during his internship he saw a huge improvement in his communication skills, and that "it felt kind of awesome" when he was able to master new advanced mechanical concepts. In his words, every new accomplishment made him "want to learn more and more things."

We're pumped to expand our internship program to run year-round in the new year! Help us give youth like Suhieb the opportunity to grow personally and professionally by donating to our year-end campaign at

Our holiday season has brought us festive lights🎄lots of laughter...and a shop bursting with students! Our Washington Liberty after-school bike club got the opportunity to wrench in our shop for the very first time this Tuesday as they started working on their Earn-a-Bikes.🔧🚲

We're pumped to have our Gunston Middle School and Dorothy Hamm Middle School bike clubs follow their lead and join us in the shop after their winter break wraps up.

Since coming to Phoenix, Suhieb hasn't once shied away from a challenge—in fact, whenever he gets stuck on a hard mechanical concept or doesn’t perform to his standards in a cyclocross race, he uses it as an opportunity to dig in and improve his skills. We're inspired by his hardworking nature!

Just in case you're not getting enough sweets with the holidays in full swing, we have some yummy treats planned for this month's Saturday Youth Rides!

Due to the rain, we will not be having a Saturday Youth Ride tomorrow, December 3, but next weekend youth can join us on a ride to Pitango Gelato on December 10 to get some hot cocoa that should keep away the cold! If you'd rather get warm by getting your heart pumping, we're having another mountain bike ride led by Arlington Trails on December 17 (sign up here: The shop is closed for Christmas Eve, but on December 31 we're ending the month on a syrupy-sweet note with a ride to the Waffle Shop in Del Ray!
