Part 1: Throughout the years, I’ve seen many swimmers who struggle with freestyle breathing. Freestyle breathing can affect your stamina, speed, and ability to see where you are going. It can result in tense, cramped muscles or even injury. So, it’s important to have good technique.
Lets look at some places where swimmers get it wrong.
•They hold their breath under water
•They blow air out too fast from their lungs.
•They lift their head too far out of the water.
What you want to do is maintain a horizontal body position while breathing correctly. To start, your breath underwater will have a slow exhale. Think of it as humming. Practice saying “mmmmm” under the water. Increase the exhale to the point of getting rid of all your air when your head rotates to the surface. When your head rotates, you need to take in a quick breath. When you breathe in, you are not filling your lungs to full capacity. Note: there are several different methods to achieve correct breathing. Some people say exhale through your nose, some people say exhale through your mouth, and some say do both. Find what is comfortable for you and do it.
