This formation has no striker. Interestingly enough, this formation is one of the best for development and is relatively forgiving unlike the 4-1-2-1. Unless you have a true #9 striker on your team who is technically sound, you almost are essentially playing a man down every game by letting that player drift up there doing nothing but chasing through balls the whole game. That does nothing to help that player’s development. Instead, this formation forces the team to attack and defend as a unit. Midfielders must look for passes and make runs opposed to just booting it up to the striker to chase after.

Key Points 🔑: Work on making runs in the final third at practice to create goal-scoring opportunities. One-two’s are very effective with this formation as well as diagonal runs behind the opposing defense. Same instructions for your CDM as the last formations. Emphasize that the team must move together up and down the field when on attack and in defense.

This formation is probably the best in terms of transitioning to an 11v11 game. It looks very similar to a 433, with the only absence being the two wingers. It is also a very difficult and technical formation to pull off but with a lot of practice it can not only be devastating for opposing teams but also provide tremendous amount of development for your players. This formation has a modern back four, where the fullbacks (or wingbacks) are expected to get forward. The fullbacks getting forward are critical to this formation and the difficulty comes in coaching your players when to get forward. The christmas-tree shape provides a lot of passing triangles for the team, and once gotten down, your team should and will dominate every game possession-wise.

Key points 🔑: Same instructions for the CDM in the last formation, but also make sure your CDM is always behind the two CM’s for support. You only have two CB’s in this formation so make sure to instruct them to play narrow and do not get caught in wide areas. CB’s must communicate with the fullbacks to get back on defense.

This formation is essentially the 3-4-1, but instead of two flat midfielders, they are stacked as one midfielder plays more support oriented. Work with your CDM and CM to always be supporting each other and emphasize your CDM to always come short and be available. Because the midfielders are stacked, this formation provides a solid foundation to build from the back but also is great going forward.

➡️Key Points 🔑: Instruct your CDM to be last in the box for crosses and to wait outside of the box for cutbacks or crosses that come out as well as for defensive support to prevent the counter.
