Women’s history month is in full swing at WMAF as we learn about historical figures such as Florence Nightingale and Harriet Tubman to activists like Georgie Badiel, who strive to bring clean drinking water to villages in Africa.

We enjoyed seeing members both past and present at the Discovery PTO Volleyball game tonight!

[03/19/19]   We are looking for responsible, reliable people who love children! Responsibilities include transporting children in a 15 passenger van from Ashburn area schools to the facility, supervising homework, supervising group games, and working directly with children. Must have a good command of the English language. Hours are flexible but range from 1:45-6:00 PM. Salary will be based on experience and education level. We will accept applicants for just counselor or just driving (hours 1:45 - 4 PM). Drivers must have a good driving record, submit a driving record from DMV.

Pediatricians are recommending that the best toys are those that “go back to basics.” In addition, the focus is moving away from toys that are “educational” to simple play based toys that encourage creative and imaginative play which promotes a child’s social and emotional development. Further supporting studies that state children learn best through play. A great read and we are happy to see healthcare providers standing behind the research.

Study Shows Students Learn Better When They Take Handwritten Notes

This week we celebrate the life and birthday of Dr. Seuss! Monday we began by reading Oh, The Places You’ll Go and creating hot air balloons using paint and Q-tips. The “dot dot” style of painting is called pointillism, one we learned about back in January during art week! Oh, the things we learn!

After a hour of a friendly competition on our obstacle course, children headed off to complete our Winter Scavenger Hunt.

Creative minds built a snowman out of laundry baskets and an igloo out of Jenga blocks. Then off to discover interesting facts such as, “What is the name of the Marine Memorial?” and “When did Shihan earn his first black belt?”

Who says fitness and education can’t be fun?!

What to do when school is closed and there is almost a foot of snow outside? Games, play in the snow, and then warm up with hot chocolate and a movie!
