USA Powerlifting - The Choice for Drug-Free Strength Sport in Virginia

Operating as usual

Coaching Spotlight. Patric Carr
I’ve known Patrick for over 5 years. He is, without a doubt, the best powerlifting coach in Virginia. He learned his trade under Matt Gary who is the best coach in the sport. He is simply awesome.

01/13/2024

Coaching Spotlight. Arielle Patra.
I’ve known Arielle since the Virginia Pro Qualifier many years ago. She is a great person and has deep knowledge of powerlifting across all levels. She is a State Referee, USAPL Certified Coach and a USAPL Pro Athlete. She is currently accepting clients. I give her two thumbs up. Reach out to her is you are looking for a new coach.

Meet Alexis McColl. She is Patrick Carr’s much better half. On weekends, she works to solve world hunger while refinishing the master bath tile, changing the transmission on her truck, building an extension on their barn and working on her clean fusion energy dissertation. In the evenings, she is cleaning up the Potomac river with nothing but a swimsuit, toothbrush and trash bags.

Here is a call out for any competitor interested in becoming a USA Powerlifting Sate Referee. Virginia is hosting 24 competitions this year. I need more referees to staff all positions. Becoming a USA Powerlifting State Referee is beneficial on many levels. You help the sport grow. You uphold the standard set by the rulebook by providing fair officiating to all lifters. You have the best seats in the house during any competition. You get to interact with all competitors. Becoming a referee also makes you a better competitor since you will acquire a firm grip on the rules. If you are a coach, it adds weight to your credentials. You learn all aspects of running a powerlifting competition. Platform officiating is only one aspect. There

Meet recap from the Chaos Lab Media Team.

Capitol City Classic Recap (VA-2024-09)

I arrived at the venue at 5:30pm on Thursday and started setup at 6pm. I finished at 4pm on Friday afternoon. I do this because I insist that everything runs smoothly without any errors. The wall worked perfectly and got me through the night. All hail Rick and Morty. I was laughing so hard I was crying. Scoring worked flawlessly and the entire meet ran smoothly without any delay. The referees did a great job upholding the standard without being too strict. We had 52 competitors and ten went nine for nine. Peter Nguyen finished with a 475 DOTS and was clearly the standout from the meet. Roughly 1/3 of the lifters were first time competitors with a handful coming in from other federations. We had a team drive up from S.C. and they were blown away. The instant replay on the wall worked great since it showed the lifters the reasons behind the referees calls.
Concerning the livestream, I tried something different for this meet and it cost me. I streamed the platform audio so the audience could experience what the in-person crowd was experiencing. However, we were blasting the music and YouTube immediately block replays. So if you weren’t watching live, you can no longer see the meet. I will probably go back to livestream commentary but when is yet to be decided. I enjoyed hearing the platform announcer on the livestream because he is great.
The meet was a great start to 2024.
Norfolk in two weeks and then comes the blitz. Feb 10th out at Very Good Gym. Feb 17th at Iron Built Gym. Feb 24th is the Delaware State Championships. March 2nd at Rappahannock Barbell. March 16th is the Shamrock Showdown will be a two day meet. 2024 is going to be very, very busy.

Thanks
Sabre

Congratulations are in order. Kristin Landi was just elected as the new Maryland State Chair. All lifters need to understand that this is a team and Virginia is going to support our neighbor to the north in any way we can.

Welcome to 2024. If you didn’t update your membership AFTER 1 Nov and are competing soon, you need to renew your membership. If you fail to do so, you will not be allowed to compete. Please do it sooner than later as I stop scrubbing the roster 2 days before the meet date when I print the lifter cards.

Contact me at [email protected] with any questions.

Thanks

End of Year Report

Virginia had a fantastic year. We finished with 1260 active members which is 189 more than last year. We held 19 competitions throughout the state which is 4 more than last year. We had 1642 competition entries which is 265 more than last year. We had 119 lifters come from other federations which is 78 more than last year. We added 11 state referees to the roster and saw 3 get promoted to national referee status. We added a video wall to the venue setup which make every meet even more spectacular. We finished the year with the Wrecker which was a total mic drop.

The goals for 2024 are as follows: At least 1500 members, 24 competitions (22 are already sanctioned), 12 more state referees, at least two promotions to national referee.

Virginia is going to continue to raise the bar and run exceptional competitions. I’ve got a meet every two weeks and two months with three meets. Train hard because I’m ready to go. The first meet occurs in one week and it will be exceptional.

Matthew Hemstock at the Wrecker.

Here is a call out for anyone interested in becoming a USA Powerlifting State Referee. None of these competitions would be possible without certified referees. Officiating a meet is not easy, but it is quite rewarding. Those that stick around long enough could earn promotions and be able to officiate at nationals. Officiating a meet provides Virginia lifters with a quality experience. Referees get paid for each meet worked and get extensive training by myself and the other senior referees.

Contact me at [email protected] if interested.

Area Lifters, Here is the 2024 competition schedule so far. There are three other meets I'm still trying to lock down to include the Wrecker. Take advantage of the schedule being provided so early. Only two states (to the best of my knowledge) have more meets currently sanctioned. Take advantage of these opportunities. Each meet will be the best that I can do.

Have the courage to step onto the platform and begin to take pride in your efforts. Virginia competitions offer an exceptional environment to start your journey to a better life.
