100 lbs for 100lbs... We cannot adequately express how proud we are of Mel and her journey. I can't do her story justice so.... From her own mouth and keyboard....

"One year and one hundred pounds ago, I started the hardest easy thing I've ever done by undergoing weight loss surgery. I debated for a while whether I should publicly mark the occasion, but I think because my story is not an uncommon one, it's important to share so others in my place will know that they're not alone.
In 2008, I was formally diagnosed with an endocrine disorder called polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS. Basically my lady hormones are all jacked up. The most common symptoms include increased belly fat from insulin resistance, infertility, hair loss, acne, and depression, among a butt ton of dual diagnoses. I'm weirdly lucky in that my case is pretty severe (one doctor's oh-so-elegant response was "woah!!"), but I really only struggle with weight and fertility issues.
In 2009, I paid for a personal trainer at my gym. With her guidance, I lost 50lbs over the course of a year. Every ounce broke me. Because of the PCOS, I had to work three times as hard to burn my excess calories. I started an unsustainable cycle to lose the weight. Every day, I did 3+ hours in the gym. Weight lifting, spin classes, yoga, running...I made all my own meals. If I didn't make it, I didnt eat it. I became so scared of preservatives, sugar, and chemicals that I developed severe food anxiety. I stopped eating at restaurants. I stopped drinking for a full year. If you didn't go to my gym, I couldn't be your friend because a day off meant a 5lb gain that would take a month to shave off. I lost my joy. It wasn't sustainable, and one stressful workplace and a bad breakup later, I regained it all and then some by 2012.
My weight slowly climbed over the next four years. Initially it didn't bother me. I LOVED my life. I worked at a winery and learned to indulge my passions. I learned who I was and what I wasn't. I met Mike in 2014, and together we became "adventure buddies." Hiking, traveling, festivals, you name it. If it was an adventure, we did it.
But as my weight increased, our adventuring became harder and harder. Everything hurt. In 2016, we started working out together in earnest. We meal prepped, ate mostly paleo, worked out. We were healthy and doing all the right things...and yet my weight sky rocketed. So I started another round of doctors, and each had the same response: eat less and work out more.
So I did. In 2017, I rediscovered my love of Crossfit. We threw ourselves into the new community, and I started to find my joy again...but I still got fatter. I began searching out more about the PCOS, because I knew there had to be a chemical reason why my body wasn't responding to the lifestyle I led. Message board after message board brought me to more women going through the same thing I was, and we were all diagnosed with the same thing.
I felt emboldened to start demanding more tests. To make a long, complicated story short, through a lot of tears, a sh*t ton of googling, and my own patented Dixie Carter-style of conflict resolution with my doctors, I found my answer. Because of my condition, my body was in a constant state of stress, and had ridiculously high levels of cortisol. When you work out, stress hormones elevate but are usually met with equally high endorphins to level it out. I wasn't producing the endorphins, so I got to be that lucky woman who got fatter the more I worked out.
The decision to go under the knife was an easy one. Dramatic, but desperate times and all that. I charted my weight gain, and expected to be bedbound by 45. I couldn't let that happen. The surgery reduced my stomach to about 4oz, and allows me to eat below my basal metabolic rate so I can finally see some weight loss.
Over the next few months, I had to relearn how to eat. I was lucky not to struggle with a lot of food addiction, but I still had to stick to a strict program as I retrained my digestive system after surgery. I threw myself into Crossfit, and later transitioned to Olympic weightlifting. The weight fell off for the first time in my life.
I felt great, but I still struggled with learning to use my new body. I went from a 250lb back squat before my surgery to barely being able to lift the 15lb trainer bar above my head. It hit my ego like you wouldn't believe. I struggled to make even what felt like small gains - and my body changed so quickly that as soon as I learned one technique, I had to re-learn it the next week because I'd lost so much. I had to learn to manage my expectations, and learn to respect the process. I had broken myself down, and was reforming, one muscle fiber at a time.
It's one year later, and I'm really happy with where I am with my fitness. I stopped weighing myself, because I'm now gaining muscle and watching the scale go up is too much for my brain to handle. Instead I'm focusing on fitness goals. I want to be able to do a pull up. I want to do a half Murph in May. I want to get back to my pre-op back squat strength. I have so many milestones ahead of me, and I can't wait to get there.
The past year is not one I walked alone. First, the love of my life, Michael. You loved me through thick and thin, literally, and without you, my life wouldn't be nearly as fantastic. Youre my everything. Stina Jade Little, thank you for handling my daily obsessive discussions about surgery, weight loss, portions, and basically everything. You've been a source of strength for me, and I would not have been so even keeled if it wasn't for you.
