Thursday of last week, two of my students came up to me after class. One of them had a question for me I've never been asked: (and after 27 years, I thought I'd heard them all)

"Professor Dalton, are you neurodivergent?"

For once in my life, I was speechless.

I was diagnosed as intellectually gifted in the second grade and that certainly put me on a different trajectory than my peers.

I'm an only child so my free time a kid was filled with adventures in the woods and up to one hundred books read each summer. 100. Books.

I'm not a believer in labels at all since I've broken away from a lot of norms in my life. I do stand out, I suppose.

I enjoy being smart. I don't shy away from it. It almost seems like a stigma these days to showcase your intelligence.

It is indeed one thing to be intelligent and yet another to make others feel less so. Remember, I've worked with students and athletes for nearly 3 decades now.

So,

I reject the label. I don't reject anyone with a question or a thought worthy of a response. My students are always worthy of a response.

It's up to you to do your Rehab. Yes, it'll suck. It'll be painful. If you want to continue on with your goals, you'll do it anyway.
