This is such an important message for every player who has ever walked into a tryout nervous.

Gina Kearns McLaughlin has been on every side of this process — as a player, on-ice staff member, evaluator, and now player development director.

She knows what it feels like to try out.
She knows what it feels like to not see your name on the list.
And she knows that one evaluation does not define a player’s worth.

Her message to girls going through the process is powerful:

There is a path, whether you get selected or not.

Keep working. Keep showing up. Keep growing.

More than 500 girls came through IceWorks for the Atlantic District Girls Player Development Tryouts — the largest turnout they’ve ever had.

And according to Gina Kearns McLaughlin, the growth is not just in the numbers.

The talent is rising too.

From the youngest players just beginning to understand the pathway, to the older athletes competing for district, regional, and national camp opportunities, this weekend was a powerful look at where girls hockey is headed in our region.

The future of girls hockey is not coming.

It’s already here.

Goals matter. Saves matter. Big defensive plays matter.

But at a player development tryout, evaluators are watching more than the obvious moments.

They are watching how players respond.
How they skate to the bench.
Whether they stop on pucks.
How they carry themselves after mistakes.
How they compete when the puck is not on their stick.

As Gina Kearns McLaughlin shared, those details can separate really good players from great players.

The message is simple:

Control what you can control.

This is how the game grows. 🏒🧡

This past weekend, 50 girls stepped onto the ice at IceWorks to try hockey for the very first time — and it was something special.

For many, it was their first time on ice, first puck pass, and first moment realizing “I can do this.”

Creating those moments matters.

As Little Flyer Girls 10U AA Head Coach Lee Elias shared:

“Trying hockey for the first time can be scary! These events are essential for helping to grow the game and also helping to introduce young players to the ice in a fun and warm environment. The Little Flyers dedication to growing the girl’s game is one of the reasons I love coaching here.”

We’re proud of every player who gave it a try — and we’re just getting started.

If your daughter has ever thought about playing, this is your sign.
