Mohican State Park has a lot to celebrate this 4th of July! While it is not only America’s 250th birthday, it is also celebration of our black bears returning to the park! Within the past week three separate sightings of black bears have been reported from within Mohican’s park property. With the return of these amazing creatures here’s a few things you need to know to keep yourselves and our wildlife safe:

🐻 If you see a black bear while hiking in the woods remember to stay calm. Make yourself appear to be large, make loud noises, and slowly back away from the animal.

🐻 Remember to stay on the designated trails.

🐻 If camping, make sure to keep food in a secured space. We do not want our bears forming bad habits.

🐻 If you do see a bear please report it to our Wildlife Sighting Reporting System: https://ohiodnr.gov/discover-and-learn/safety-conservation/stewardship-citizen-science/wildlife-reporting-system

🐻 Remember this is exciting news to see these bears returned to their natural habitat. It means our forests are healthy enough to support animals at the top of the food web. This also means our forests are on their way to a balanced ecosystem.

🐻 Please remember to respect our wildlife to help keep yourself and them safe.

The Buckeye Big Buck Club sponsored a fishing derby for the Wyandot County Rod and Gun Club in Upper Sandusky.
They hosted 175 kids and every child got a new fishing pole. There were prizes awarded for the biggest fish and the littlest fish as well.
